Hey, i haven't been really active here for a little over a year. I went down on my xj650 and me and the bike got fairly banged up. My first thought was to sell it and just move on i had other bigger faster bikes to ride anyways. Well i could never do it and every time i went into the garage and saw my first bike the one i poured all of my love into in high school and brought it back from its neglected state into a respectable bike o what seems like forever ago. Well i finally decided its time to treat her right. What i know for sure is the front forks are bent as well as the gauge cluster and the head light. the ignition switch is broken in half and that seems like that about it. i guess i'm just wondering is there any other common issues that happen when these bikes go down and does anybody have some leads on parts or a parts bike that i could use to get her up and running. Also to get her back in shape i'm going to have to pull the front forks off to replace them is there anything i should know before I dig in?

Since the forks gotta go......I would suggest upgrading to the 1982-83 ('83 is preferable) XJ750 Maxim front fork system....it's a bolt-on replacement, and that gets you the dual front discs. A very nice, simple upgrade. Make sure you get the calipers, master cylinder, etc. with the forks.

P.S. I'm assuming that you have an XJ650 MAXIM, the above advice is for that model XJ650 only!

are you sure the frame didn't take a hit, if forks are bent, so too could be the front headstock, normally a wheel alignment check ,would reveal this, but as your forks are bent, this wouldn't be accurate.
one way to check would be to remove the forks and triple trees ,and place a suitable straight pole, through the headstock and see if it is straight, up with the bike upright.
