The valve stem diameter is only 5mm. I just measured the outside of the shim and it's 7mm.

thanks for the reply Tony. when I checked with my local stealer they told me that the shims (adjusting pads) would be either 7.5 or 9.0 mm.
not to question your ability to measure but could there be 7mm shims just for the Maxim X.

    thanks

Go to the 'base forum' you wish to post in (Technical Chat; Hangout Lounge, etc.).
In the upper right hand corner just underneath the Search box there should be a button to Post New Thread.

If they don't know exactly which it is, then find another shop to buy parts from (I know a place that isn't difficult to find it you glance around here).
The Maxim X shares the basic engine design with the FZ750 and Fazer, so it does not have a special sized pad.

I agree 100%. and thanks for the additional info.
So when shopping on eBay, 7.0 mm shims is what I should be looking for not 7.5 or 9.0?

    thanks

there is no need to shop on ebay to buy shims, there is a shim pool here.

thanks for the info on the shim pool. I did know about it.
I would like to have my own selection of shims.
guess I need to order one and measure when I get it.

I went to local dealer asked for 29mm shims 3.45 thick. After looking in the book for 20 minutes they told me they do not carry 29mm thick shims. I only go there for my inspection now.

searching ebay with "maxim-X valve pad" gave me several good results, more consistant results than with "maxim-x 7 mm valve pad" or "maxim-x valve shim". No flat shim is suitable for the Maxim-x.

if you measure the clearance, then take the tight ones out so you know what thickness to get, you can measure the diameter. then there's no doubt about it

1985, 1986, 700 or 750, US or Canadian, they all use the same shims.

I guess I missed that on the first readthrough… If you wants to buy a kit fine, whatever…

As far as shim diameter, it doesn't really matter as long as it still fits inside the bucket! 7 mm, 7.5 mm… Inside of the bucket is a lot bigger than that-

You need to measure your clearance(feeler gauge) in order to find out what puck you need. As time passes the shim(puck) will probably be thinner as the valve is pushed further into the seat.

Just want to clear up any confusion.

Yes a 7.5mm shim will fit inside the bucket, however the valve stem diameters vary between models. As far as I can tell, the current kits are not compatible because they need to fit on the 5mm valves on these models:

I wouldn't use anything not compatible because you will potentially have a shim that doesn't seat on the valve correctly.

Unfortunately doing a shim swap does take some time. You will have to measure all of the clearances, pull the cams and find out what shim is on the ones that are out of spec, and calculate the appropriate shim to get you the correct clearance needed. Swap your existing shims around to help minimize the new ones you need, then visit a reputable shop in your area to help you get the remaining ones you do need. Not the cheapest solution, but will help if you need to get back on the road quickly.

With that said, this kit shows to be compatible with the 1987 and 1988 fzr1000 models that is included in the above list:
    https://www.denniskirk.com/hot-cams/valve-shim-kit-hcshim01.p148751.prd/148751.sku

You could purchase at your own risk and see if they will work on the X model you have.

I would first like to thank you all for responding and providing me with some valued and detailed information.

I run my own shop and have many customers that bring to me an assortment of bikes to repair.

I primarily work on Yamaha V Maxes and Ventures and currently own 7 V Maxes and 1 Venture. I provide engine tuning, rebuild motors, transmissions, carbs, starters, forks anything you can imagine.

With that said I have worked on a couple of Maxim X’s in the last little wile and now own an 86 750X that I’m going to do a complete frame up restoration on. I plan on expanding my services to include tune-ups on the smaller Yamaha's.

I already have an extensive collection of 25 and 29mm shims if anyone needs those sizes. The idea of a shim pool is great for the guy tuning his own ride, but for someone like myself I will need to have a good selection of shims on hand. I plan on buying on flea bag or wherever I can purchase them in order to establish my own shim kit.

This forum is a great place to exchange information and my hat is off to everyone (not just to those that replied)

    Thank you all

Toolman (a proud new owner of a 1986 Maxim X)

I've owned a 1985 Maxim-x , it was a great bike, it pulled hard and the engine ran very, very smooth once properly tuned up.

We do have a few members who run shim pools.... There are shim pools in NY, CT, Ontario, and a few others. Some specialize in the Maxim X shims, others in the airhead shims. We also already have our supplier that has any size that is needed.

I have never seen MaximX shims that have differing inside diameters... Heck, for that matter I've never seen any that have differing outside dimensions, either-----

My pool is primarily for the airheads, which are all 29mm shims, but I do have a small pool of X shims, as well as a fairly extensive pool of the 25mm shims for people who may have the Venture/and other make/models that take that diameter shim.

if you need any shims let me know what size 's you're low on. The only charge is shipping and they are yours FREE for the pool. I also have the tool for the 29mm shims if anyone needs to BORROW that.
