I was just wondering, is my 4 into 1 exhaust stock? I don't seem to think so. Because every bike I see has a single on each side. I'm just a little curious.

Nope - none of the XJ's came with that stock - all had 4-into-2's.

Sorry but that's not entirely true, the XJ650LJ Turbo came with a 4 into 1 exhaust. Yes there are two mufflers, one on each side, but the right side one is an exhaust for the turbo waste gate.

Not much at all Altus :-/ but hey we'd all put up with the little differences to try out the turbo.

Well now that I've had my fun I have to tell on myself. First Carb clinic I did I tuned a turbo. Bike had one carb missing at idle and I was checking the exhaust to see which side the missing carb was on. Told the owner that the exhaust is weak on the right side and had he checked his valves lately?
He looked at me with that you are in "Moron Spotlight" look. That's when Gary took me aside and told me the scoop on the right side exhaust. DUH!

thanks for all the help. I didn't think that the 4 into 1 exhaust was stock. Like I said, every bike I've seen and rideen and 4 into 2.

But woulnd't the 4 into 1 hinder performance, seeing as is there isn't much disipation of fumes and gases. It would make more sense to me to keep it a 4 into 2 to make for a much smoother exhaust release, so you woulnd't have as much carbon build up.

As is the case with most Japanese motorcycles, the stock exhaust systems on the XJ bikes were very good and very efficient. While they might save a little weight, aftermarket 4-into-1s aren't likely to give you any power advantage without getting obnoxiously loud. If you keep your bike long enough to need an exhaust change-out, go back to the stock system. It will be quieter, better looking (IMO), and probably more powerful than whatever the PO hung on your bike.

I'll keep that in mind. I don't like the idea of a 4 into 1 because it doesn't look as nice, but what can I do? At least I can say I'm a proud owner of A Yamaha Midnight Maxim 750!

Interesting, I haven't seen or heard of a bike having a stock 4 into 1. Interesting.
