Hello again. First off I want to thank you all for your great help. My question now is this, on my 82 xj750j the carbs were leaking gas very bad. I got a really good deal on a used set of carbs in very good condition. I thoroughly dismantled and cleaned them and when I did I noticed that all the float needles are spring loaded except one. Today I removed the old carbs off the bike and out of curiosity I removed the bowls and found the same thing. The difference being that the non spring loaded needle was on a different carb. Is this normal?

All the needles in both carbs should be spring loaded.

Cool, thank you. I will switch out the bad one with a good one from the old carbs

I have some news for you.

The good news: you now have a spare set of carbs.

The bad news: if you solve the leaking float needles by switching to a different set of carbs it will be a stroke of luck.

Here is what you should have been doing:

    In the Church of Clean

The stuck spring-pin on the one float needle might be the cause of the overflow problem, but that does not mean the carbs don't need further attention. In fact it's a sign that they do.

I'm going to go ahead and say that you might as well clean whatever set you're going to use and get some rebuild kits.

If you neglect to completely, clean, rebuild, and properly setup your carbs, you're just going to be chasing your tail trying to get it to run right.

Did I mention that they have to absolutely clean? We're talking like operating room, surgical clean.

Anyway, new rebuild kits should come with new needle valves, so just go ahead and bite the bullet and do it right the first time.

All the information you need is provided for you right here in these forums.

More good news...meticulously follow the church of clean and it will be a good while before you do it again, you'll be able to assist others with troubleshooting issues and your bike will be easier to dial in and run better. We take the time to make them run right so we can spend more time riding them.;)

Thank you. I will be doing that since I'm already more than halfway there. I am waiting for new jets to arrive anyway. ( PO had installed 4 into 1 Mac header which was trashed so I replaced, and drilled the air box, but he did NOT rejet the carbs. I followed Chacals formula and ordered jets as a starting point). It's been an adventure as this is my very first restore job!

It'd be easier to plug the holes in the aribox. The stock exhaust is very free-flowing, so it's not usually necessary to compensate for that.

But it's not the stock exhaust. I just replaced the trashed header with a new Mac 4 into 1 header

But that dosen't matter. Ehxaust changes alone rarely require rejetting.

Oh ok. Well it was popping pretty good so with the air box drilled I'm going to give it a try. I went to 122 main jet and 42 pilot jet according to Chacals formula. We will see what happens I guess
