Hey there, I just bought an 82 seca xj650rj my first bike and first project mechanically. I have been having problems with it from the begining and managed to deal with most of them, but right now the bike just won't idle properly. I have located the idle adjustment and fiddled with that but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions??

P.S does anyone know the proper needle settings for the carbs

What is the idle doing specifically?

Hey, well after I start the bike the idle drops below 1000 rpm chugs a couple times then dies(sometimes it won't even chug). that's about it. I thought it might be a low battery so I charged it and that didn't really do anything. I'm stumped.

    Hi Jdog,

I would suspect fuel flow, clean out the carbs and fit an in line fuel filter. That sorted out my idling problems on the same engine as yours.

Thank you, where abouts would I put the inline filter?

cut the fuel line and insert between the petcock (fuel tap) and the carbs.

Might help if you clean all 4 carbs. Before I did mine, the bike would not idle at all. It would rev with the throttle open and choke/enrichment on.

Was told that the idle circuit in the carb is clogged. There are three circuits in each carb:

    Enrichment
    Idle
    Main

Don't be scared, there's a forum on cleaning the carb by Rick in other page. Just follow all steps carefully and use right tools and technique (press down as you turn on jet screws to prevent the screw from cam out, the brass is soft).

I'm sure it's the carb. After I cleaned mine, it idles much better and doesn't stall.

    Here it is.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2908.html

After cleaning and putting all 4 back together (I suggest you take a couple of pictures of the whole assembly to record how things go together), you will need to bench synch the carbs. Here, you can read how to.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=4434.html

I strongly recommend that you bench synch the carbs (it's not that difficult) at least.

After that you still need to synch the carbs using a YICS tool (if your bike is equiped with YICS system, you can make the tool yourself). I'm still riding mine without synching the carbs but I intend to do soon because the bike's not happy about that.

    Good luck
