Why do some valve cover gaskets have a large hole, see pic and some don't. Doesn't seem to be necessary on my XJ650RJ. I've seen some where the hole is filled on the gasket and not cut out.

It's an old speed secret. They cut out the unnecessary part of the gaskets to make the bike lighter and faster!

Alright....first performance mod. I'm cutting a hole in mine and shaving the whole gasket down to minimum.

Nah, lose the gasket entirely and just tighten the head bolts a little more, it'll be even lighter and if any oil leaks out, the bike will be lighter still!

Gotcha, so some bikes need the hole for some reason. Mine just seems to have an empty hole, that doesn't seem to go anywhere.
    Thanks
