Given the fact it's still Winter here, and idle hands/minds and all that, I've been doing some thinking. I know air cooled XJ700s have a different rear wheel than "X" models, with their almost solid wheel. I would think that the air cooled model's wheel would be a fair bit lighter.

I wonder if there would be any acceleration or even suspension compliance (unsprung weight) advantages if a lighter wheel was fitted to the X...

The "Air cooled" 5 spoke wheel is 3.8lbs lighter ( I checked on my postal scale before installing) than the Maxim X wheel. Have one on mine and the only downside is that it doesn't have the cush drive.

Less unsprung and rotational weight on any machine is a plus. I think it makes a huge difference on mine.

    Just as I suspected. Thanks!

I wonder about how well the thinner spokes will hold up to hard acceleration, particularly with no cush drive in the hub.

Got 12K miles on it with that style wheel. I sure ride it hard, more like a sport bike than a cruiser, and it seems to handle it well. Just have to be conscientious and not be abrupt with the clutch engagement.

I have been doing quite a bit of reading on this subject, and everything I have seen says that an almost 4lbs reduction in wheel weight will have a very positive impact on accel/decel, and suspension compliance.

The quest for one begins immidiately!

Make sure you get one with the hub included. They have a 5 bolt attachment unlike the Six hole one on the Maxim X wheel.
