Is there an easy way to line up and re-install the drive assemble?

Not my picture: Can't seem to get mine lined up.

Hopefully you're installing the driveshaft into the swingarm and not trying to assemble as one unit shown in that pic. You can pull the boot back at the engine and get the yoke straight. Now slid the shaft in, use a rubber mallet to get the shafts past the clip and locked into the yoke. Rear drive should slide on easy now.

Pull the driveshaft out of the rear drive (don't loose the spring) and install the shaft first. It has to "click" into place and would be really hard\awkward to do with the rear drive attached. It's takes a slide hammer to get it out, so it'll take a good whack (delivered properly with a rubber mallet) to get it back in.

If I remove the drive shaft, I must be stupid, how do I get the rear drive back on with the snap ring, won't it be inside the shaft housing?

Ha, no I have the Haynes Manual. It shows taking out the whole swing arm assembly. It doesn't seem to explain the reassembly of just the drive assembly. I guess I'm just an idiot. I'll figure it out...someday.

    Yup, I've read that>
Reassemble the shaft by reversing the removal sequence. having first lubricated both splines with molybdenium grease. Push the universal jointhome over the shaft end until it clicks home over the spring clip.
I don't have the universal joint out, I followed this>
20.3 The final drive box may be detached as a complete unit after removing the four flange nuts.
That's what I did, so I have the whole unit pulled, but not the universal joint.

You don't need to pull the joint unless you are pulling the engine, or replacing the u-joint. The procedure for reinstalling the drive shaft and final drive is exactly as described.
    1. Push the drive shaft into the u-joint socket until it snaps into place.
    2. Install the spring into the final drive input cup.
    3. Install the final drive, torquing the nuts to spec.

You may need to peel back the u-joint cover to keep the joint in alignemnt so the draveshaft can go into place, but it can be done without doing so.

    Rear drive assembly finally in:

No need to remove the drive shaft, just needed to get the cross joint coupling aligned and it slid right in. My drive shaft does not have the clip on the spline, like this one:

So it slides right in, just needed a couple of tries to get everything aligned.

Does your drive shaft have the groove for the clip? The clip is important. It positively locates the drave shaft splines to reduce wear and prevent spline failure. You can run without it, but it will cause trouble later on. I recommend getting a clip and installing it during your next winter maintenance.

Did you make sure to use a high-pressure moly grease on the splines?

I apologize for not having mentioned those two details earlier.

The spline end is just like the one pictured above, no clip or groove for the clip. It has a clip like the one above, on the neck of the spline, that one is still there, but i don't think it ever goes into the coupling.

Did not use any grease on the splines, it never had any signs of it when I pulled it out. When I looked at the cross joint coupling with a flash light, when I was aligning it, it looked very clean and shinny and also did not appear to have grease on it. It certainly sounds like a good idea and I can just remove it and put some on, it's not all tightened down yet.

Edit: did more research and looked a lot of drive shafts on ebay, seems like the 81 does have the spline clip, none of the 82 pics show the clip. Must have been a change for some reason.

That's odd. My '82 750 has the clip. Yamaha did make a lot of tiny changes to the various sub-models over the years though, and not vary many of those changes were made across the whole family.

Yea, this is a closer look at what mine looks like:

Here is one with the clip:

Top one is listed an an 82 and the bottom as an 81, I did see some listings for an 82 with the clip, hard to tell why and when the change was. Thanks for all your help.

Pull the shaft out of the hub and install that first. Easier to put the hub on then.

I keep the engine in gear so the ujoint doesnt turn, I reach through the boot to pivot the ujoint as needed, other hand feeds the shaft to the joint, and small incremental turns til the shaft slides in. Takes only a few moments.

No need on mine, as shown above, just needed to align the u-joint and slide it in, didn't need to remove the drive shaft.

my ujoint is so floppy, even with the shaft installed first, it sags down and the rear of the shaft rests on the housing...making lining up with the rear housing impossible...how do you fix that?

Turn the output shaft 90 degrees so the u-joint can't flop down.

I put the shaft into the rear housing first, then feed it up thr0ugh the swing arm. then hold the boot back so I can rotate the u-joint......
