The headlight issue is a symptom, not the cause of the problem.
Start at the source, and then we'll work our way forward.
Pull the alternator cover. Clean the rotor traces, and check the brush length.

    What bike you talking about?

14.2 volts is on the low side of good. How old is your battery? is it full of acid if not fill with distilled water only!
have you cleaned the ground from battery to motor and frame?
what wattage is the headlight bulb?

start by reading the information in this link below

The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide

it is at the bottom of the pageRead the introduction first ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OVERVIEW:

DOUBLE BONUS ROUND!! Charging System Electrical Specifications:
    from the bonus round
"* approximately 500-2000 rpms: 1.8 volts gradually increasing to 14.2 volts
    * 2000+ rpms: 14.2 volts up to about 14.8 volts, with a maximum of 14.8 volts (all models except XJ700-X and XJ750-X)
    * 3000+ rpms: 14.2 volts up to about 14.8 volts, with a maximum of 14.8 volts (all XJ700-X and XJ750-X)
If your charging voltages are too low, suspect the alternator brushes first, then perform the alternator stator and rotor checks as described in the Alternator Section."

explains what tests you have to do.

Low voltage does not typicaly point to a faulty RR. As XJ said, keep cleaning connections.

It's a 82 xj650, I'm gonna go over all the connections check the grounds and I have spare r/ r that I know is good I'll try that and I'll keep ya posted thanks to all for your suggestions and guidance . Just for future reference this bike was a basket case it's been chopped robbed and stripped. Putting it back together has been a real challenge as far as diodes and switches and relays this bike has none! Guess I should have noted this from the start!

    has it been minimum wired?
there is a doide block in the head light bucket that controls safety relays and other things its about 2" x1"x 3/8 inch thick with a rubber boot on it. you will need one if you go with original wiring

    Better.

Once you hit the reply button just start typing. The cursor should be after the last ] in the quote, otherwise you're typing inside of the text that you quoted.

Good deal. That is a fairly uncommon type of failure for an RR, but it does happen.
