These pop up from time to time. The ads I love are the ones with every make and model of every bike ever made listed at the bottom, so that the ad will show up in every search for no matter what machine.

    My sides hurt! :D

Sad thing it isn't funny because there are so many "cobbled claptrap hillbilly contraptions" out there. And these are brought to you by the same people that are voting for our next elected official!

    Me? I'm voting for Canada:

Building a wall to keep us out...LOL. Probably not a bad idea Canada, before some genius here notices all your oil rigs sitting idle, then there is a 'suicide moose' that crosses the border and blows up, and before you know it, we are fighting a "war on terror" with Canada.

Yep, that XS looks dumb, looks too loud and looks awkward to ride.

And if you offer him $2,500 he will tell you to pound sand.
He qualifies as an ass-hat wearing douche waffle! :p:p

I think part of the problem with the bikes that look like crap and ride like crap after being butchered is just bad planning and too much racing to the finish. When cutting and re-manufacturing any bike people should take more time in their thought process, all parts were put together a certain way to get a certain feel not just for looks so any adjustment made changes other factors in my opinion. chopping a frame can either stiffen or loosen the ride for example.

    re: Canada-cy...

    Too funny!

Thinking to self: "Hmm, let's see, if there are 35 million of us splitting a year's shift of taking care of our southern neighbours, that would be about 15 one thousandths of a second each...couldn't mess up that badly in that short of a time..."

I'll take my shift of course...

I recently bought a '79 CR250R for a bit too much $. The guy had "rebuilt" the top end himself...

I took off the cylinder to inspect as it felt underpowered, A nice wiseco piston was put in backwards, with the intake cut out on the exhaust side and exhaust port holes drilled on the intake side making the piston useless. AND it had scored the cylinder walls.

It didn't shift all that well so I took apart the lower end...I don't even want to start listing the foolishness I found in there.

So, even if it looks decent from the outside...

Mind you, I'm at fault for buying it while my "gut" was telling me "Run Away!"

I agree with Québécois59, some people "are just plain stupid" and should have their tools confiscated.

    I don't get this.

He "put a ton of money" into an XS to pretend to be a Harley. And he wants to trade it for a Harley. WTF didn't he just get a Harley to begin with? Then he could be like tens of thousands of other individualist rebels with the same bike.

its the hard sales pitch method.
Maybe ask why the only mirror is on the wrong side.

he is just kicking himself in the a@# for spending all that money instead of just buying a HD to start with' after all his HD riding friends make him ride at the back of the pack

I am in an evil mood. would be nice to find a group of people to reply and offer less than 2500 and rave how cool the bike looks and how much skill he has to turn out a fine ride like that.

Bwahaahaa, I like your evil plan. I'll start the ball rolling..

Here's what I'm sending (I'm playing it as though I haven't read his ad correctly)

Hi, I see you would like $2,500 for your project motorcycle. It looks like it is missing a few pieces, but that's okay I'm only going to use it for parts.

I can offer a 1991 dodge colt (parts car), a slightly damaged canoe, one good paddle and two life jackets (one floats!) along with $1000 !

    Will you deliver it?

    Here's his response:

"It's been up for a while with not much interest so I guess we can go ahead and trade"

    Surprise!

    Anyone want it? I don't.

I'll donate the '91 dodge parts car and two life jackets to the cause, but you'll have to find a canoe, a paddle and $1000 bucks on your own. Ha ha.

His description is spot-on, aside from having rebuilt the cock. That worries me a little. At least he used new rubbers when he did. Always play safe.

He is asking Kenny Roberts RZ350 money for it though. It might be worth $4K if it were an all-stock RD400 Daytona in showable condition.

If you want to get pulled over every block, this is your bike

Damn, its freaking spooky how did he know that I love getting constantly pulled over by the cops? *Must have that bike* :)

I think this picture says it all... the caption reads "Ran when parked" and 'comes with free firewood'...

Check this bad boy out... if Liberace had ridden a motorcycle, I have to believe it might have looked something like this. Pretty fancy considering it will spend most of its life sitting parked in front of a cafe while its owner drinks lattes or craft beers...

I mean no offence to those that like them, but what is the draw of a cafe racer as they call them. I mean really, the seats look uncomfortable, posture on them would suck so your back would be killing you in no time, hampered steering and holy crap the vibration from the wheels would be horrible from the looks of things... I may be wrong in my assumptions as you know most times when you ass u me... don't get me wrong customizing bikes I like but this I think most times is just destruction. Please tell me I'm wrong, but that is my opinion.

So that you can imagine yourself a 1960's Brit rocker.

Cafe racers happened originally when people were modding bikes to be more like race bikes of the day. A race bike is about speed, not comfort. Hunched over position is to minimize wind resistance, seat is to be as light as possible and to keep your butt from sliding off under acceleration.

Choppers were for drag racing. Long wheelbase for straight line stability over maneuverability, open pipes for WOT performance. Then they became the cool thing, and useful mods got exaggerated into nonsense.

Bobbers were the poor man's sportbike - remove maximum of weight to go as fast as possible on what little horsepower you got. Personally, I'd rather have a real sportbike.

Streetfighters were sportbikes whose owner wiped out and didn't have the money for new plastic.

Things that I don't get at all: apehangers and hardtails.

Apehangers make the bike hard to control and by and large look stupid. Combined with the feet-forward position of choppers, they make the rider look like a giant bug spattered on the windshield. How that is in any way cool, I have no idea. Hardtails roll back a century of progress in motorcycle suspensions and comfort for no benefit that I can see. Usually it's about making a non-Harley looking like a Harley, which I don't get either. You want a Harley, get a Harley.

I agree with this assessment as well, like hogfiddles said " a bike looks best when it looks like it came out of the factory". I agree and they handle better than when they are modified as well. in my opinion. I really don't think I could ride for too long with my arms over my head to steer...lol

I'm in the same camp as Hogfiddles and Chance. I will admit that I sometimes find a slightly modified bike that is done up just right as long as it keeps its original look and feel. This is usually restricted to performance enhancements such as better brakes, better suspension, tuned pipes (two strokes especially) and fuel/ignition upgrades.

I love bobbers....when they are done in the spirit of the original bobbers (take extra stuff off; not cut the frame up)

I love cafe' racers......when it suits the basic purpose of the machine and they are true to the original style (even better if it's an actual machine of the period).

I love apehangers and hardtails....that were built by people who lived within/respect the original chopper culture of the 60's and 70's, and who only built hardtails because that was what the frame was to begin with (a lot of the iconic choppers were full suspension bikes).

I strongly dislike attempting to emulate the past without understanding it, and without taking into consideration the suitability of the machine being used for the project (though I did see this really cool BMW R100 chopper once. Showing up to a BMW rally on it would be hilarious).

    +1

Notice that I didn't say I don't like them at all-- I agree with K-moe.

I DO have a preference for a chopper look. Example would be my pseudo-bob 700 in the gallery. It has a raked/ lowered/chopped look to it----- and it can go back to factory original in about 45 minutes. Absolutely NONE of it was cut/chopped/bent/welded. It is ALL cosmetic and illusion.

No frame chopping - for sure

    And it is beautiful.

K-Moe you are right they are all nice bikes when done right and no frame bending or chopping. Even Ape hangers look pretty neat at times I admit.

My baby - still as pretty as the day I drove it off the showroom in early 1985 - in spite of aging a bit.
