Hello everyone, I am new to the forums and new to motorcycles. I bought a 1983 XJ650 K. It is stripped down pretty bare. I found the minimal wiring diagram and i have it wired up except for the lights. The stater engages and the engine turns. I am trying to find a tank that fits so i can get some fuel to it to see if I can get it running. This brings me to my next problem. The carbs that it came with are not the stock ones. I can't get them to fit into the boots in the intake. I think they had them rigged up with some pvc pipe and plastic tubing. I think the reason being that the stock boots are about a half inch too short. The carbs have a nipple on the bottom of them that rubs the motor underneath the carbs preventing them from pushing all the way into the boots. Any advice about how to address this would be greatly appreciated. I'm sur this is one of many issues i will need help with.

Good luck. Not to be discouraging but you will be riding a hell of a lot sooner, and probably a lot cheaper, if you find a set of the correct carbs. If you need funds, try to determine exactly what carbs you have and sell them, someone out there needs the set you have. But honestly if you are new to this, I wouldn't dream of starting with the wrong carbs and trying to make them work. Maybe if you already had a couple of running bikes and just wanted this to be a long term project, but as I said above you'll be on the road sooner if you put the bike back as close as possible to stock/factory.

Post up pics of the carbs and of the intake side of the engine. It's possible that you have the correct carbs, but that the intake boots were put back on in the wrong locations.

Here's a pic of the carbs as I was trying to put them on. I'm pretty sure they are the right boots just the wrong carb. I couldn't find a model number on them. I'll snap some pics of them tonight. This is gonna be a long term project no doubt. I was thinking of getting some universal fit boots that are longer than the stock ones. Will that work or is it completely a waste of time? Thanks for the advice

Here's a pic of the bike, it's pretty much just a frame and engine. I only paid 150 bucks for it though.

Ummm ya. Not the correct carbs at all.

FInd out what they are, sell them, and use the proceeds to pay for the correct set.

Another one for "Guess what the PO did to my bike?"

Those are rather unique looking carbs (at least to me), do as K-moe suggested, they may be greatly sought after by someone!

A quick search reveals that this are from and atv and may be worth about $30 each.
But do your research, measure the throat to see what size they are and what application it is truly used on, then hit the Artic Cat (or whatever) forums and see what you can get for them.

They kinda look like the carbs from an early 70'S Honda CB. 750 maybe?

That looks like them. You guys are great! I tried to ID them by measuring but they don't match anything on the site. Will they work on an xj650? I had some spacers made so I was able to mount them. Here's a pic

Idk...you'd have to know exactly what they are from, clean them up and make sure they can be installed with the airbox and boots without leaks then see if you can dial them in. Imo...

Given enough time and money, you could make any carbs work.

Better yet, find the set that yamaha spec'd out originally and ignore the hassles. Sell those to the guy with a Honda that needs carbs.

Sorry I've been inactive for a while, but does anyone know what years carbs are interchangeable for these bikes? I just got a fuel tank and now I'm looking for carbs. I've found 82 and 81 carbs but don't know if they will work. I appreciate any advice given.
