Thanks to all the knowledgeable contributors who helped make this build possible. The bike itself is a 1981 Maxim that over the past 35 years has suffered from neglect and incompetence from the local 'mechanics'.As big bikes are scarce here I jumped when this old girl became available. quick summary of what the build required.
Paint.......Frame, swingarm ,tank and sidecovers....did it myself
Chassis.....Steering head bearings, fork seals and fresh oil, swingarm bearings, rear shockies and Dunlop D404's
Engine......New starter clutch, gearbox bearing(incompetence, there was one missing where the starter clutch locates in the case) Everything looked within tolerance so just a general clean up and reassembly . Over the years someone decided to paint the engine black over all the oil and roadgrime and it looked like a black and silver worst nightmare so had to paintstrip the complete engine, the cases are now polished alloy, barrels painted black with filed fins on both the barrels and cylinder head. Off with the cam cover, reshimmed the valves and to my astonishment the valve timing was out so reset the valve timing. Fixed oil leaks from tacho drive and cover.
Carbies.......Cleaned, new bowl gaskets, set float levels and synched, discarded airbox and fitted pods and oil breather hose.
Electrical......New starter brushes and commutator cleanup, Alternater clean commutator Fitted bigger 14 a/h battery across the frame using the original battery box and half the old airbox All switchgear, wiring checked , contacts cleaned dodgy joins soldered and repaired.Fitted a relayed Hella h4 55/100 watt beam.
Brakes.....new rear shoes, front new hoses, master and calliper seals and pads, disc machined.
The bike feels tight in the chassis department bit slow on the steering but I am used to guzzis and old bevel drive dukes.Brakes can only be decribed as "adequate" again they aint no triple disc brembos. Engine feels fine with good midrange, haven't really given it the full tilt yet as I am still feeling my way around it. Reliability, well who knows only time will tell, I have only put 200 kays on the clock but so far it has started first time everytime. Thanks again to all on the forum...................here are some pics......Dino
