Hi guys, if I were to get some slip on Harley pipes, would I have to re-jet? I don't want to do that, but I want some better looking and sounding pipes.

I was even thinking of custom making some pipes and just have the pipe come out the back, but would that be legal?

The XJs are set lean to begin with and with any exhaust or airbox mods, it will probably run lean.
I have a pair of Harley Screamin' Eagle mufflers I tried on my 750 and they do have a nice sound when it idling and get a bit louder out on the highway. I think you cna run them without rejetting, but you'll have to adjust the air screws and synch the carbs.

I too have contemplated the exhaust thing. What to put on ( I'm a pretty cheap guy). I kinda like the look of the shorties but I also like a quiet bike. Loud bikes are just fategueing to me. I also have looked at some slash and turn outs. Does anyone make a turn down? I like the shories for the price but am afraid they are louder then I want.
    Any ideas or advice?
    thanx

Just a shot in the dark here, but, could I use a pair of "Cherry Bomb" mufflers on the bike? I know they are for a car, and I tryied putting them on, but after a bit the bike would not even start until the old ones were back on. Is there a way I could put them on, then just adjust some screws on the carbs to allow them to work?

    It ain't that easy.
When the exhaust flow is unrestricted ... the combustion chamber empties of all the exhaust gases. The portion of unburned exhaust that remains in the Combustion Chamber when the exhaust flow is restricted ... is used as fuel on the next power stroke.

Since the Cherry Bombs let it escape. You will need to re-jet to have the mixture be corrected for the unrestricted exhaust.

The Jetting will be less complicated than if you eliminate the airbox and install Pod Filters.

Kits are sold for "Performance Exhaust" upgrades.
    You need a Stage 1 & 3 Kit.

The Carbs will need to be altered and re-Jetted!

    Good Luck.
    It can be frustrating sometimes.
