Ok I just got back from a nice long ride. Everything on the bike is great except the gears are popping out and giving me a false neutral. I have never experienced that with this bike in the 3 years I have owned it. The engine only has about 20,000 kms on it. The only thing I can think of is maybe the synthetic oil is causing it. That being said, I have never had a problem with synthetic oil in this bike before. The starter clutch complained. I did inspect the chain guide inside the engine last winter and was like brand new so I don't think plastic bits are getting into anything.

The starter clutch complained, it pops out of gear, and you don't think the oil is playing a role?

Well it might not be, but it could be, and oil changes are easy. Why not do that first?
If the symptoms don't clear up then I'd pull the shifter cover and inspect the selector. It may have a weak spring, or wear that's causing the drum to be able to move too easily. If it's not that then you've either got badly worn dogs (which is unusual aside from second), or bent shift forks.

Oops sorry. I meant to say it has not complained at all.

This is true. I just changed it too. That's going to be some expensive lawn mower oil. haha! I will find out if the oil is the problem soon enough I guess.

If you drain it into a clean pan you can rebottle it and save it for re-use.

That's a good idea for sure. I have a clean pan ready to go. I'll let you know how it goes after i have tested the other oil out for a couple days.

I changed the oil back to conventional. So far it's still jumping out of gear. I'm going to take the left cover off (shifter side) to see if anything is not right in there. I really hope I don't have to split the case. I just put the engine back in after painting the frame. It was a pain but looks good.

I opened up the side of the engine today. I found a broken spring. I think it's called the positioning spring. It's an easy fix and the local Yamaha dealer had it in stock $4.95 CAD.
Thanks for the tip about the spring K-moe :)

It's not, unless you've started having that problem in more gears than second.

Good Morning K-moe I am having the problem with more than one gear seems like 2nd and 3rd for sure.
It drops out then kinda sounds like an auto matic clac, clac, clac so I gotta pull in the clutch and kick it up 2 to 3 and then outta 3 fast usually cause it will fall outta 3 and do the same thing.
