Advice needed

    Just bought this bike today have never owned a bike. I am a mechanic and up for the challenge has been sitting do not know how long. Where should I start I want it to be safe and drivable it appears to be in good shape. I don't even know the engine size so info would be helpful thank you for any information beforehand. 20160422_143717.jpg

    Nice bike. I'm going to venture a guess that it's an 85 or 86 XJ700X Maxim. I'm not sure though. One of the experts will be along shortly and tell you everything you want to know about it.

    Thank you I hope to get it on the road but I'm guessing it needs a carb rebuild just for starters I paid 100 for it at a yard sale with clean title he did not know much about it

    Wow, that's a steal. I'd probably adjust the valves and then do a compression test first just to see what condition the motor is in. Then you can go from there if it checks out ok. I would recommend getting any parts you need from Len. His username is chacal. You can click on the XJ4Ever link on the upper right of this page. He has all the right parts and great customer service.

    That is an XJ700n Maxim.

    You will want to get both the Yamaha service manual and the Haynes as they compliment one-another.

    Go through everything, top-to-bottom. It's rare for any motorcycle to have had any of the required maintainance done.

    The best source for parts can be found via the ad at the top right of each page. Chacal has what others don't and never sells you the wrong part.

    Thank you all for the info I am reading these articles as we speak I don't want to skip steps and be frustrated. I am going to learn all I can and get some manuals before I even start I'm sure I will have some questions in the future. This is a whole new thing for me and I am aware there will be a massive learning curve but that first ride will be gratifying and thank you all again for the resources.

    Have verified it is a 1986 via vin decoder and also found rust in gas tank...but hey its what I signed up for so step one for me is remove tank and carbs

    Found some concerns the carburetors have been apart very recently they have been numbered but the numbers are not in sequence 2 and 3 are mixed up so I am concerned my before notes would not be accurate to read assemble as anything could be installed incorrectly however I found a cracked intake manifold on number four not cracked all the way through but I would not trust it. pitcock and carbs were leaking fuel and found extra bolts laying on engine lol I belive prior owner had good intentions but lacked Information. removed and emptied fuel tank and carb set I am taking notes and parts lists. Just going slow and inspecting everything.

    The #2 and #3 carb bodies are identical. The float bowls may have been all that was swapped.
