Is there any way to rebuild the mirror mount on the master cylinder side? I see a lot of the stems broken off in them on ebay. Mine did as well, but I really messed it up trying to get the broken pc out. Price on a new mc is out this world.

How did you attempt to get it out? Easy out reverse bit?

I DESTROYED one of the screws that holds down the cap on my MC. Luckily, It was the inside and there is a slight offset on the body. I was able to drill all the way through and out the bottom to put a long skinny bolt through to hold things down.

Since then, I purchased a used MC to replace the one I ruined. If you decide to go that route and purchase a used one, ask the seller to verify that all mounting points, screws, ect. are working properly (not seized).

They are out there. I got my replacement for $27. I'm in the process of cleaning and rebuilding right now.

When I bought my 82 XJ650 Maxim someone had rethreaded the mirror mount on the master cylinder to some unknown larger size so I drilled it out and used an insert like a helicoil to return the threads to factory. That way I could screw in the proper mirrors or any mirrors with the same threads as stock threads.

Thanks waldreps I was thinking about using a helicoil. I was looking for a used one too but most look like trash and are over priced. Going to check into the helicoil some more.

hmmm. I thought the r/h side mirror has a left hand thread. not a problem if its been re drilled. but the original r/h mirror will have a l/h thread.

The right hand mirror does have a left hand thread on a Yamaha.

I think M10 is correct. You can send chacal a message and ask. He told me when I did mine but I've forgotten now. When I did mine, I made it a right hand thread cause I was buying new mirrors anyway. Most, if not all, other bikes use right hand threads on both sides so universal mirrors work then.

The fake aluminum welding rod from the hardware store and redrill and tap. Easy stuff to work with.
