Shifting Issue Help Needed

    Hey Folks - just bought an 83 750 Maxim and sometimes it's hard to shift, especially from 2nd to 3rd. I read that sometimes certain parts in the shifting mechanism deteriorate and those pieces will float around and get stuck now and again.

    I read a thread (I think here) that suggested putting her up on the center stand and rocking the drive wheel back and forth to free up the junk, check to see if that's the problem. I did that, and low and behold it shifted fine (for a little while.) Obviously the junk is still there and I need to clean it out.

    Can I clean that stuff out and/or replace the disintegrated parts without splitting the engine? (i.e. can I access that from the cover plate?)

    Here's from the thread I saw (not on this forum)

    These bikes have chain (both timing and primary) tensioners that are
    made of a semi hard plastic material. Over time, this plastic
    disintegrates, the pieces fall into the oil and get sloshed around.
    Sometimes, they get jammed into places where they cause problems like
    these.

    The only proper fix is to open up the engine and replace the
    tensioners and get all the remnants of the old ones out.

    As you have found out, sometimes wiggling can make the pieces move to
    a place where they cause less problems, but sooner or later, they are
    going to jam something important or block an oil passage. You should
    get your bike fixed before it is too late.

    It is the chain guide that needs to be replace and the only way to fix it is to split the case. I have done this on two bikes now. It can be done I a weekend, but read up on the process several times before hand.

    It is possible to fish the current broken pieces out but more will fall or the primary chain could start slapping against the case. Highly recommended to fix as soon as possible.

    you have a cam chain and a "primary chain" internal to the motor

    It's not a tensioner at all. The guide is located above the hyvo chain (primary). As 550 stated the cam chain is a separate chain.
