I'm looking at buying a new set of tires for my xj550 maxim (1981) and have seen a few people use a few different things. Was considering 110/90-19 on the front and 130/90-16 on the back. As for tire type I was thinking a more retro firestone style but also like the look of rounder sport bike style tires on these bikes.

What tires did you go with and what made you choose them? Pictures are great.

Also if you changed sizes or went with a different set-up, let us know!

Shinkos- because they were cheap, have a nice soft compound and I could get a matched set in the sizes I needed. I had a set on my RD350 that I put 3,500 miles on before I sold it, and they were wearing very nicely. Oh- and I got them from Amazon, with free 2-day shipping!

+1 on the shinkos. I put the exact same on my Seca 550. Cost was the driver and I've had no problems with them.

Dunlop D404's were good. Bridgestone Battleax BT45's were better. I'm running Pirelli Sport Demon's this time around. About 1500km on em so far, minimal wear, but damn, they are super sticky in wet conditions.

I got the Dunlop D404's over the Shinko 712's cause I read that the straight center groove on the Shinko front tire can cause tracking.

The only time I have felt the front tire tracking is when riding over a bridge with a steel grate surface. On dry and wet road alike, they perform excellently!
