I'm trying to figure out how they attached the engine to frame ground wire
onto the frame, on the XJ550 Maxim?
    Thanks

the battery ground goes to motor and has a second wire built in at the motor ground end it comes back up and goes under the right(bottom) bolt that holds down the battery box.
is your ground wire missing the second wire?
I will follow up with a few photos

Yea I was wondering if that's how it went.
The wire is on the bike coming from the motor.
    Both wires I should say

you may want to consider a new bolt and washers where it attaches to the battery box.
while we are on the subject of grounds
I think that the black heavy gauge wire from the voltage regulator connector is the same heavy wire that connects at the coil mounting bolt you should make sure that connection is clean also.

checking the other ground is a good idea.
So is the one going to the battery box just under the bolt head
or does connect underneath with another nut?

Any wire that bolt to the engine, and bolt the other end to any bare spot on the frame will be a ground from engine to frame.

just under the bolt .I do not like this location under the battery as in may end up with spilled acid on it.

What hogfiddles said. Just run a wire from a bolt on the engine to a bolt on the frame. Clean paint from where the wire will contact both surfaces.

Right. Not sure why you replied/quoted my post? Especially since you specifically mentioned how you dont like the bolt at the battery box, and then just suggested it?

That is the original connection point.

Motor mount bolts make really good ground connections, they hold the motor good too.
