Hello, I am working on a 1982 XJ550 Maxim and have been doing some modifications. I was messing with the handlebars and accidentally ripped a wire out of the left side of the handlebars right next to the clutch cable. The electronic wires that go to the thumb switches like the lights, turn signal, horn, and choke are all still going where they need to be. I just didn't know what this electric wire was that I ripped out. Any help would be great, thanks.

That's the safety switch for the clutch, well at least part of it. Looks like it came apart and you will be replacing it. The other end of the wire should be in the headlight bucket. If you look on the bottom of the clutch lever perch, there is a little hole. The switch will snap into the perch, you can stick a small rod or screwdriver into that hole to release it.

That will only play a part if you want to start the bike in gear. If you are ok with shifting into neutral to start the bike, you can tape it up and save it for another time.

Wait, I've always had to shift into neutral to start mine. Even with the clutch pulled in when it's in gear, the start button does nothing. I thought that's how it's supposed to work.

the clutch safety switch makes it so you can start the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in, like if you stall it at a light that way you do not have to find neutral.
you can twist the wires together to over ride the switch but remember it will start in gear with the clutch out.
if you do not twist the wires together you will have to start the bike in neutral ALL the time, but it will allow you to shift through the gears.

you should replace the switch and not keep running with the wires twisted
thats because your switch is broken it just has not fallen completly apart.
there is a post about this showing what a bad switch looks like that is about to fail

HOW TO: Tell if you need a new clutch switch by just looking
