I can't get it off and I feel like I'm going to break it.

A little heat on clutch cover will help
Using a 12" or larger adjustable wrench and put some pressure on it while applying heat to case should do the trick

Would a hair dryer cut it?

Might work if you can concentrate heat without heating cap

I don't have that big of a wrench. Could I just remove the clutch cover?

Do you have any size of adjustable so that you don't damage cap?
I have a real big one for nuts and bolt that really piss me off

Oh I got it off! My room mate had one big enough. So couple more questions, how does the sight glass help me tell how much oil I have? And I took the screw out of the oil filter and got sidetracked, then the oil filter case fell when I wasn't paying attention. How does the oil filter and everything go back on? The Haynes manual doesn't tell me for the xj650j.

There are high and low marks on the cover at the top and bottom of the window.
    Haynes manual pg.140 section 18 paragraph 4.

That's what I'm looking at and it doesn't show a big spring. I have the nut, filter, case, and a large spring. I'm not sure of the order and orientation of the spring and filter

The picture is not of the oil filter housing. That's the oil pump.
"Push the center bolt/bypass valve into position in the bowl, then fit the spring, plain washer and element".

The tab on the housing should be on top and will seat between two short fins in the front of the motor.

The washer often gets thrown out with the filter because it gets stuck to the rubber bit.
The Haynes does cover your bike thoroughly.

You need the washer, it's actually the "spring seat"........

One note when putting filter on the bypass valve assembly ( bolt in center of filter housing)twist it as you push it on as not to tear the gasket or in some cases it will push inside the filter
