Hey guys my name is Shawn I'm new to the site I just bought an 82xj550 that hadn't been started in years. The tank had crud in it and the petcock wasn't letting fuel in so I pulled the tank and made a makeshift tank and dumped some fuel in it and fuel started dumping from the first right carb into my air box. Would not enough fuel restriction from not having a petcock cause this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Welcome to the Club. There's a stuck open fuel float valve. You need to rebuild the rack.

Right on man I appreciate it. I found a buddy that said he'd rebuild and re sync them for 300 if I bought parts. While working 60+ hours a week I think that'll be the rout I go just due to not having time. Is there a rebuild kit you recommend?

Member Chacal(Len) is our parts guy. Click on the icon in the upper right corner or start a conversation with him. He's why many of these bikes are still running.

I'm pretty sure that Hogfiddles does them for less, and he's very experienced. $300 plus parts is a shop rate, not a buddy rate. Start a conversation with him.

Or you could do them yourself. It's really not that difficult, just time consuming as you learn. I get the time concern due to work, but you could have them done and back on the bike in around 6 hours of working time.

Was the bike running ok then the carbs started leaking? Or was it sitting then started leaking when you went to start it up from sitting?
Plus one on 6 hr job if not too bad. Go through all the cleaning and adjustments. Clunk test and bench sync and you will be good.

I was hoping he'd understand this ^ and try to make time to do it himself after reading the church. I didn't want him to think I was trying to set his buddy out.

It cost me about $200, including parts to have my carbs done at a reputable shop. It did not include bench syncing, but did include new jets and gaskets.

Sometimes its better just to keep the buddy's for beer and let dudes that do carbs do their thing on them. Not saying the carb dudes don't drink beer but they are still doing carbs efficiently with mass quantities of beer in their systems. Then if you can pay the carb guy $300 in beer and you get to drink 1/2 then its a good deal!

Burp, belch, burp...that's most of the carb dudes here less the mass quantities, burp, belch, of course.

Hey guys I got ahold of a shop that would do it for less than my buddy so I'm either gonna go with hogfiddles on here or do it myself. Im just pumped to get her on the road and don't want to mess something up. I hate my dirt bike carb and I've only got one and it much more simplified than the ones on my xj I'm sure.

And rocs82650...thank you for your service

Really it's better t go with the recommendation on here. Dave (Hogfiddles) knows these inside out and won't want to **ck-up his reputation. Your $$s of course but if I was your side that's what I would do.

Yea, while I'm sure the shop has good guys, the opportunity to send them to someone who knows everything about the specific bike and set of carbs you are working on, for the same investment, is a no brainer.

I'm going to third that recommendation. I've rebuilt many carbs before and while usually successful, there have been times where I had to do it again. Another plus is Dave has so much experience, all those frozen drain screws etc. that usually end up with a trashed part, broken extractors, and bloody hands are just another day in the office for him. I sent my carbs to him last year, they came back looking better than new. More importantly, when I bolted them on it fired immediately and didn't leak. Just had to sync and colortune and I was off. The time saved in just pulling them one more time and correcting something was worth it to me.

Maybe because I've done these on mine as well as some other bikes I've owned not to mention Holley, Solex, Rochester car carbs , I'm also cheap I'd rather do it myself . Or maybe I've been sniffing jet fuel too long. Doing them your self is not real hard have patience and a manual , and of course this site, and a paypal account to xj4ever helps .
