My 1981 XJ650 came with K&N pods. I've been questioning whether or not the air exhaust is being 'dumped' to the correct place. I think normally this tube goes back to the air filter box... but now it's just hanging there. Can I just leave it?

I question whether or not this 'air exhaust' is dumping 'bad' air back into my K&N air filter pods.

Perhaps, I'm misinterpreting the function of this 'exhaust'.

Thats a crankcase breather. It would normally be vented to the airbox, but with no airbox it is just hanging out in no mans land. No need to worry about it venting bad air to your intake, however it would be wise to put a breather filter on it to keep bugs and junk from finding its way into your crankcase.

Lengthening the hose and attaching the filter to the frame will help to keep oil mist from soaking the filter, and you.

Where should I point it? Down towards the tire like the battery exhaust?

I wouldn't put it anywhere dirt would be thrown at it. Also, due to the possibility of oil mist coming from it, I certainly wouldn't put it near my tire. You could also shorten it, so the filter just sat practically on top of the motor.

This guy from Summit Racing could actually just be installed in place of the hose.

Or stick one like this into the hose.

Running it up to where the airbox used to be, but closer to the seat is where I woudl suggest. With a hose that long there will be little to no oil mist reaching the filter. Run it low and the filter will get soaked.
