    Hi!
I am new here...and I have a BIG problem...I lost the only ignition key that I had for my Yamaha XJ550 SECA (1985)...When I lost the key , the ignition switch was in "ON" position...and still is...
I need some ideas , how to fix or replace the ignition switch and gas cap switch ...with minimum damage...

    PS.:..sorry for my bad english.

All you need is a LOCKSMITH.

On the bottom of the ignition switch you should find a little label with the key code on it. A locksmith can use that to make you a replacement key.

Be sure to disconnect the battery before removing the ignition switch.

I had a key made on my 550 and all I had to do was look on the back side ot the ignition and saw 4 numbers which I gave to the locksmith. Cost me $10 or $15 bucks for a key and an extra.

Bring your Title to a Dealer or a Locksmith's Shop.

They can access the Ignition Key's CODE through a secure online Data Base.
You NEED to bring the Title or Valid Registration to have a Ignition Key Cut.

Thanks very much to you all...I will search and contact a local Yamaha dealer ...this is the best option...I think...

Before I lost the key...I tried to make a key copy at Locksmith's Shops near my town ...but nobody had a similar blank (key)

If I don't resolve my problem with the local dealer....I will ask somebody from this forum ..to help me with a key copy from his local Locksmith's Shop... payment thru Paypal ...
PS: sorry again ...for my bad English :)

Hi. Ebay and/or Chacal (here on this site!), has key blanks. You can order a couple from him and then get them cut if you have the code.
I just went through a similar thing for a car. I didn't lose a key but because I only had one key, I knew I better get copies made. Since it was a GM VATS key (with a chip) I had to measure the ohm resistance to determine which blank I had then I ordered one online for $8 and had it cut locally. Dealer price would have been much $$ more.

Our Locksmith's Shops are very rudimentary.... they have a carving machine ..but nobody has access to a online database... or any database... the code and the blank are useless around here...my only hope...a local Yamaha dealer...

L.E.: The local Yamaha dealer told me that he can only provide me the blanks(that is good)...or the hole set , including all 3 new switches ..but very expensive.

Used to be able to gey keys with vin numbers in Ontario at one time. But only thru a master lock smith. But you can no longer do that. Take it to ANY lock smith and he can make a key. Just pull the ignition and take it in!

Both my bikes were missing keys when I got them. Took the ignition switches and fuel tanks to locksmith and he made keys for all. Is it strange that my ignition keys do not open my gas tank- that the keys are different? A minor inconvenience but seems strange to me.

Oh, ok. So, yeah--- with different cuts to figure out, that makes more sense.

My bet is that tank, or at least the cap, was replaced. Seldom do I get bike that still has all-matching keys/cores anymore.

I'm 99% sure that neither the ignition or cap were replaced, I have a feeling it is just due to the manner in which the locksmith made the keys in all honesty. I was more posting as a "caution"- as though I do have working keys, they are different. Which is really a minor inconvenience from having NO keys at all in reality, but I was curious if these bikes originally came with separate keys.

No- actually different blanks and different pattern. Its odd I agree. A pretty established lockshop that has done work for me like this in the past, so I didn't ask questions initially.

They were all one-key-fits-all-locks bikes when they were first put together.
