I have a 86 maxim x 750 water-cooled all my intake valves have 0 clearances and I don't have a shim small enough to get a measurement I don't really want to order a random shim just to get a measurement any ideas

    Thanks

You'll have to get a shim. There is no work-aroun that I know of. Start with making a chart of the shme you have (going to need to do that anyway), then order a shim 2 or 3 sizes thinner to use for measuring. Unfortunately you will be removing and reinstalling the cam a few times, unless you want to drop two sizes on each intake shim and hope that gets you into the correct clearances.

Sure some will be tight, but to have them all at zero clearance?

I have never seen all of the valves on one of these engines to be less than the .11 mm (.004 in) spec.

Make sure you have to have the very thin style feeler gauge set in order to be certain you can get a proper reading, as the thin width of the cam lobes prevents using a standard style feeler gauge.

I cut my feeler gauge in half so it would fit in the little slots in the cam caps and I couldn't even get the .002 one in. the bike has 39xxxkm and I don't think they have ever been done do to the fact it has odd number shim ex 192 shim
And all the exhausts are .006 across the board.
Kinda getting frustrated as I can't find 7mm shims only 7.48mm

So if you have it apart and you've measured all the shims you will have to swap them out with ones that you do have, then use the shim exchange to get the ones you need.

Here's an excellent write-up you can use as a guide:
    http://www.maxim-x.com/notes.html#shimpool
Follow the spreadsheet link on that page to help determine what shims you'll need that you can't swap over from you current ones. You can then exchange shims with Hap (the guy who runs the shim pool) to get the correct sizes.

The example you have with the existing 192 shim would probably need a 188 or 185. They are not all "on the 5's" like 180,185,190,195 etc.

You'll need to contact Hap at maxim-X.com for a source of X shims in Canada

.006" = 0.1524mm which is out of spec (0.21mm - 0.30mm), but only by about 0.05mm, which is the increments that replacement shims are available in (i.e. 1.80mm, 1.85mm, 1.90mm, 1.95mm, etc.). Original installed shims were available in "odd" sizes (such as 1.92mm) so that the clearances could be "blueprinted" and made as close as possible to equal across all valves from the factory, but as far as I know, were never available "over the counter" as service-replacements.
