Has anyone had success with replacing the main seal under the left cover without splitting the block?? I have a small leak from the seal and i want to fix it before i fire the bike up.
I have only found a few blurbs about digging out the old seal and pressing in a new one in with a little RTV on the edge. I'm not 100% sold on what i saw and I'm a little hesitant. Also if someone has a part number of a good seal to replace it with that would be great to. Hoping i can pick one up locally at a shop and not have to order it..
    Thanks in advance

The original crank seal has a lip that interlocks with the cases.
    The replacement does not.
Diging the old one out wouldn't' be too difficult, just be careful to get all of it.
I would not use RTV on the new seal out of concern that some may end up loose on the wrong side of the seal.
Locktite 515 and 518 are anaerobic case sealants that replace the Yamabond that was originaly used. If any gets on the wrong side of the seal it will mix with the oil instead of forming boogers and clogging an oil passage.

While I have not replaced a crank seal in that manner, I have done similar seals on gearboxes, and I do know that several of the "older" forum members have done so sucessfully to their XJ(s).

good point about RTV. Pretty sure i have anaerobic sealant at home. I'll tackle it this weekend and report back.
