I am sure this answer lies somewhere within this forum but I cannot find it. I am currently getting approximately 265 km to a tank of fuel. That is from Full to the top of my Reserve. Does that sound right? Seems to me I should be getting more. Thanks

That (if my conversion is correct) is about 160 miles to the tank.
That sounds good to me, but different XJ's have different size tanks.
Which bike are you asking about?

I'm still tuning my carbs that I just rebuilt so hopefully mileage will improve but I get about 85 or 90 miles and then I have to switch to reserve. I've never run it empty so I have no idea how many miles I get on an entire tank. This is on my 82 XJ650 Maxim. Welcome to the forum Craig B...put your bike info in your signature, that'll save you some questions.

On my XJ550 Maxim I too switch to reserve about 85-90 miles depending on city/highway mix of driving. Calculate your actual gas mileage. Mine is between 38-44 mpg depending on driving conditions. I've had the bike since new, and this was about the same mpg as in its youth.

Probably 90% of my driving is less than 30 mph, town driving.

About once a tankful I take it out on the road and crank it up for about 10-15 miles, but other than that, no road trips.

Now that my bike is back "in shape," I may try a long distance trip sometime to see what a whole tankful would get at highway speeds.

FYI - Our speed limit is 65mph on back roads and 80mph on the freeway.

I have an app that I use called Fillup that helps me track my mileage in all my vehicles. I use it every time I fill up. I have a mix of city/highway driving and get anywhere between 30-38 mpg right now. Of course, with my rebuilt carbs, I seem to like to let it rev to 9000 rpms now. :D Once I get used to the new found power and get it dialed in right, I'm sure my mileage will improve.

Holy crap. 9000 RPM? If I go past 5000 RPM I think I am pushing it too hard, lol.

Yep, before my carb rebuild, it didn't want to pull very good at all above 6000 rpm but now it screams up there.

I have found the exact opposite to be true. When I, like Craig B, didn't feel comfortable taking it past 5k, I was getting north of 45 mpg , once I started to get comfortable with what the bike could do, it dropped off pretty quickly!

What I meant was when the new found power isn't so new and feels more normal, I'll probably go back to riding like I used to and not going above 6000 rpm very much. Then my mileage should improve. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

Ha ha, I was (sort of) joking. I guess I just never got back to that point enough that my mpgs recovered.

For comparison purposes I hit reserve on my Seca 750 at around 120-130 miles (depending on the wind mainly), and run out entirely after another 20-30 miles.
WInd. Wind is the key. Ride with/like the wind......

Ya. Motorcycles will do that. Even the fanciest of sportsbikes have a coefficient of drag that is not dissimilar to that of an upright sheet of plywood.
