I hate the god awful chopper bars on my stock xj. Can I make the swap to drag bars without any issues with the master cylinder? It'll be at a pretty steep angle. I don't have any experience working on bikes, and I don't want to f*** anything up. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll assume by the description that you have a Maxim.

To fit flatter bars you will need a different master cylinder.

Which XJ do you have? Master cylinder diametes vary among models.

Also, can I keep the cables the same length, or will I need to get shorter ones?

The cable length will depend entirely on what bars you decide on. If you go with a bar that has a similar rise and pullback (but loses the buckhorn bend) then you can stick with the facory cables and brake line.
