Bike dieing while riding.

    So I have been having a problem with my bike dieing while on the road. I will feel it lose power or not be responsive and i give it gas and its dead. If I hit the start button it will fire right back up and Im in busness. It seems pretty random but seems to come in waves meaning that it wont happen for a month then it will happen 2 or three times within a short period of time, then its fine. I thought it was probable my fuse box so i made one using inline fuses and i thought that fixed it till today and it happened twice again? Im at work and havent had time to look at anything but any ideas would be appricated.

    You don't describe what environment you are in when this happens, ie highway cruise, acceleration, heavy braking, etc...
    I will have to make suggestions at this point until you give us further input.
    Likely culprits:
    1. Fuse Block
    2. TCI
    3. Fuel delivery
    I'd change out the fuse block as a matter of course, they are the weak link of happiness on these bikes. Since you have changed out the block, check the rest of the ignition system for bad grounds. Had a broken ground lead (the big one on the back of the engine) leave me stranded once. It can and does happen. The gremlins that claimed your fuse block can also pop up in other electrical systems. Take a very close look at your relays, they can be corroded as well. On a very rare occasion, the ignition switch can brake internally, pull yours apart and check it for cracks. The TCI units on these bikes can also develop cracked solder joints, pull yours apart and inspect. Reflow any that seem suspect.
    Make sure your fuel lines are fuel rated. Check the fuel bowls and float valve seat filter for sediment. Nothing like a little junk to block up the fuel delivery. Install a fuel filter so you can see the condition and operation of your fuel.
    There are my immediate ideas. Since your ahead of the curve on the fuse block, I'd start with the TCI and work from there. Another possibility is the pickup coils starting to go. They are a trick to troubleshoot sometimes. They like to work just fine and fail on an inconsistant basis. Most of the time they die outright but there are times...

    Thanks for the quick reply. To answer your first question Im typicaly lightly accelerating or cruising at a stead speed. It has happened at anything from about 25mph up to 70mph so no usually thier. Im thinking its an electrical issue because its just a die, im going to start checking over the tci as you suggested and continue to go from there.

    Did this get fixed?, mine did the same thing and took carbs off and found sediment in float bowls, gonna get a paper filter and see if that catches everything!

    Check the air vent to your gas tank. Most Yamaha from this era are vented through their gas cap. If the vent is partially or totally plugged, this is exactly what happens.

    I had the same thing happen on my bike, the ground from the battery was bad (if you wiggle it, or went over a big bump, all electronics would cut out).

    Check that, too.
