Hot Starter issue

    Hi, I have an 82 Maxim XJ750 with 47,000 miles on it. Last summer the starter started to develop an issue when hot of not engaging, the starter whirs but it is not turning the engine over. I would have to hit the button several times and eventually it would catch and fire but it has gotten worse this year already. Cold is fine, hot not so good, to the point of having to push start on more than one occasion. My question is: what is wrong? I ordered a rebuild kit for the starter and am hoping that it just needs cleaned up inside a bit. Is there something else wrong with it that will require more in depth work? Just looking for ideas, I have read some of the posts on starters but nothing seemed to fit exactly what my bike is doing. Any help/ideas would be appreciated!

    The starter clutch is slipping. That can happen if the starter isn't spinning fast enough, or if you're not using a JASO MA compliant oil.

    What oil are you using?

    Rebuilding the starter is not a bad thing to do. If that dosent' solve the problem, and you're using the correct type of oil then you may be looking at needing to rebuild the starter clutch, which requires splitting the cases.

    If that ends up being what needs done, do not fuss over it too much. It's an opportunity to also address the alternator chain guide that will one day break apart on you because of its age.

    Rebuild the starter.
    Make sure that your battery is holding a full charge at rest.
    Make sure the battery and case grounds are free of corrosion.
    Make sure you have the right oil.

    If it still slips then just bumpstart it when warm until you can do the starter clutch rebuild this winter.

    I use valvoline 10w-40 for four stroke motorcycles. I am still hoping it isn't the starter clutch and a rework on the starter will be enough.

    I read in some of the posts to try seafoam. Run it for 10 minutes with that in it, then change oil and filter. Figure it can't hurt to try it, inside probably needs cleaned anyway.

    Just run the seafoam until the next oil change. It won't hurt anything if you dose according to directions. You may want to change oil and filter early if you think that the sump has a lot of sludge in it. In taht case I'd still ride it for a t least 25 miles. 10 minutes is braely enough time for the Seafoam to start dissolving anything.
