The coils on this bike have been a problem for a long time, I think. I was getting spark arcing on a couple of them. My neighbor covered up the plug wires with insulated tubing a couple of years ago and that seemed to do the trick. Now they are arcing again at the plug wires caps. I put tape around them but didn't seem to help. I can still feel spark around the base of the plug caps when I put my fingers near them.

I was going to pull the coils off for a closer look. If these are shot what are my options with custom coils? Like those dyna coils? Or can these coils be rebuilt or modified? I'm afraid to buy used ones and end up with the same problems in a couple of years again.

Dyna coils are a good option, but require some fiddling to mount in the stock location (Chacal sells a mounting kit and the coils).

Late-Model Honda CB 750 coils (with removable wires) are a good option and less expensive.

Or you could use the plug wire digging into coil method to replace your wires if the coils test as good.

I had good results potting new wires onto the coils of my Suzuki GS850. I'll give that a go on my Maxim if/when they need replaced before I go to the Dyna coils again.

Good ideas. Would like to try the new wires into the coils, can you direct me to information on how to do that?

I put 81 Honda CB750 coils on my 82XJ750 Seca these install in stock location and have removable plug wires. My coils were cracked and I had the Honda coils from the bike in parts box ...They work great and are very plentiful on ebay cheap. Attached is a picture of install you only have to flip over to fit uses stock bolts , I desoldered the wires off original coils and used on the Honda coils. In addition these are Hitachi coils same as originals.

Jetfixer, k-moe mentioned that option for the CB coils. Seeing your success with them I will go that route if these coils fail the ohm test. Checking that today.

Ok. Primary test on both coils was good. 2.9 ohm. Secondary I got no response?? Does that mean its mainly a plug wire problem or am I missing something? I also tested the coil on my son's Seca 750 and got the same response. 3.0 ohm primary. No response secondary. I think I'm missing something on the secondary test.

The secondaries are tested between the plug wires, preferably with the plug caps removed so that the resistors in the caps can be tested seperately and the ends of the wires can be checked for corrosion.

Yep that's how I checked for the secondary test but with the plug caps on. Even so you would think there would be some kind of movement on the tester. Nothing. I took the coils off that Seca and put them on my bike. Its plug wires are in good shape. I'm still getting some kind of electrical shock from the left side of the engine on 1 and 2 wires. Was doing this with the originals also. Right side is ok. I noticed when taking off the coils on the Seca that they had a ground wire attached on each coil mine only has a ground wire on the right side coil.....??
