    Hey

Can anyone that has repaired a starter clutch on a 92 Virago or any other model that would have the same starter clutch setup tell me what parts usually fail. you can click here for a parts list.

    any help would be appreciated

I have not repaired a starter clutch on a 2nd-gen Virago, but since it uses the roller-type clutch I can tell you that the springs weaken over time, and the rollers wear to the point of not grabbing. Does your starter clutch make a whirring noise instead of spinning the engine?

the starter engages and then skips. the sound it makes is like marbles in a tin can that are being shaken.

OK. Replace the rollers and springs, and clean the shaft the rollers ride on with some 400 grit finishing paper. When you have the starter clutch apart inspect the roller carrier for cracks.

If the noise is really loud then it is possible (though less possible than on the early Viragos) that one of the gears is worn and not engaging properly. Yours uses a positive-engagement Bendix style system, so that is really not (as far as I know) a common problem, or very likely.

Hmmm....the rollers and springs are in the starter clutch assembly. Maybe the 1100 uses a sprague clutch and it isn't rebuildable.

Have you checked with the folks at ViragoTech Forum?
