I have an 81 750 (Seca) that's running and just took possession of an 82. The 82 is cosmetically better off than my other one (which I inherited). Both have some front seal leakage and the new arrival has no front brake pressure. Both have ugly crappy aftermarket (cheap) exhausts but the older one was re-jetted and fitted with pods. Whichever one prevails into my keeper, I'd like to put on a decent exhaust (stock if I could find it). any suggestions?

First effort will be seeing if the new one will run - carbs and tank look almost too shiny, there was compression but there was no fuel or vacuum lines. Where should I begin...?

Thanks - I've seen some of these already but it's a nice reminder of the location and availability of valuable info. Let's see if it will start this weekend...

I would start by doing compression checks, checking calve clearances, and then deciding which engine is the best candidate for making a runner. I'd prefer the cosmetically better machine, but body parts can be swapped easier than engines. I would then take the second machine and go through the engine (replacing the alternator chain guide, and rebuilding the starter clutch) so it is ready for the eventuality that the runner needs engine work .

It runs... but only above 5000 Rs. I can start it with ether and the choke on all the way - so next stop is taking the carbs out. Compression was good, added new plugs... Also front brake cable was broken so I'll either need to find a new one or start pirating parts off of my other XJ.

The brake cable should be available from XJ4ever but plan on other parts also. You will want to rebuild the complete brake system.
You know it runs now so start the process of making it safe and reliable again.
