My 1983 xj 650 5g2 maxim isnt sparking it will only turn over when the side stand switch is connected so tried new coils tci unit ive ohms & continuity checked all bits i need to voktage testef everything coils have 12v etc etc so popped the side cover off to find the pick up is getting hit by the roter i have tried to adjust it but it's in a set position any ideas also wires didnt look healthy but again checked and there pulling readings my concern is the roter arm hitting the lower pick up yet clears the top pick up fine

Give us a photo or video of the ignition pickup. Turn it with a wrench if you do a video.

How old is your battery, is it serviced to proper level with distilled water? Low battery voltage can also cause ignition problems.

    Battery is 4 weeks
battery is fine problem lies with either tci unit the pick ups or the rotar hitting the pickup

The reason I ask for a video is that I suspect a serious amount of wrongness, and am hoping to have that disproven with evidence.

Is the crank cover on that side damaged in any way?
