I had the thought the other day that CRC's Trans-X Limited Slip Additive may help with clutch slippage in our bikes. So, today I sent off the following email to their technical support people:

I'll post their reply once I receive it.

Well... that was quick! Here's their reply:

Oh well... back to the drawing board. Per chance, do we have any oil experts in the house with thoughts on using this friction modifier with regular motor oil?

    Hi Gamuru,

friction modifier's = bad news for wet clutch motorcycles, you definitely want to stay away from it.

Aye from everything I have read, anything that ads some extra lube power to a car engine, would be bad news for a wet clutch. I was going to use some RESTORE in my oil till I read that it could burn friction plates up in the clutch.

Limited slip differentials depend on the operation of pre-loaded clutch packs on each axle shaft. Gear oils made for standard differentials do not contain the additives that make these clutches work. What I was trying to find an answer for was whether or not Trans-X--or similar products--would modify regular motor oils so they would more resemble Yamalube and work the same.

I applaude your thought process Gamuru, it shows a sharp mind! Friction modifiers are not something you want to pour into our beloved XJs, they just don't play nice with the clutch linings.

The clutches need to be wet with oil so they won't grab and throw you off the back of the bike.

Once the "Slip" is squeezed-out and the Clutches engage ... you DO NOT want an additive that will prevent the Clutches from holding the Driven Plates firmly so that there is no slip.

I only know one and only one product I trust in the Sump of my motorcycles.
    Castrol 20/50 GTX Racing Oil.

If their out ... I go find a place that's got it!

I am looking to replace my clutch in my xj650. I know OEM is best in my R1 for a replacement. I am wondering if the same is true for the xj? Is there a spring kit out there that will help with clutch slippage?????

What Gamuru is pointing out is that the additive helps transmission bands and clutch packs grab better, and it might help a worn clutch grab better.

The problem I see is- - will this additive fowl the rings and valve guides?

You can get a Competition Clutch Kit from Barnett.
Including a Competition Pressure Plate and Springs.
You can get a Clutch that won't slip. Won't.
You don't need a Clutch like this unless your sponsors are going to dump you if you don't start collecting checkered flags.
