I am thinking about getting this it has 9000 miles on it

    Last ran in 2005

Carbs were rebuilt in 2005 and new tires and new exhaust.. but owner stopped riding bike when he noticed rust in tank .. he said he tried to get rust out of tank but botched sealing job and just parked it

Its a one owner bike always kept inside

My ?s are is gas tank expensive to redo and I guess carbs need redone also

Also someone told me these engines got week and started to go at 40k miles is this true?

First: the engine is good for well over 100,000 miles and likely far more than that.

Secondly, redoing the inside of the tank will depend on what liner was used, but it's not terribly expensive; about $75 in materials (far less expensive than finding a good used tank).

Thirdly the cosmetics look ot be excellent and that is very low mileage, but you will need to go through the machine thoroughly before considering it to be road worthy.

It's missing the tank badges, but I can tell you that if I had the cash to spend I'd be making an offer on it myself.

My only concern is the state of the alternator chain guide. Be aware that it will eventually fail. Most seem to be failing due to a combination of use and age, but that one may have more life in it since the miles are low and it's been stored inside. Unfortunately the alternator chain guide can only be replaced by splitting the crankcase.

I would doubt the mileage if it weren't for the condition if the gauges. No fading at all; not even the needles.

You will be taking care of the carbs (and all other maintenance) yourself, for far less than that. If you feel uncomfortable, or don't have the time, Hogfiddles rebuilds carbs for a reasonable cost (again, far less than a shop).
Generally speaking, shops do not do nearly as good of a job as we can help you do.

"Firm" means you have to wave a stack of 11 or 12 benjamins under his nose, in person............and be ready to stuff them back in your pocket if he says no!

Bike looks very good...if you do buy it a couple of tips...DO Not hack it into a bobber it looks like it is in fantastic shape. Do Not take off stock airbox and put pod filters on they are not worth the trouble. Go though the brakes front and rear , check the date codes on brake lines, and tires more than 5 years old replace ( brake line probably 1982 vintage) replace fuse block if original glass fuses , blade type fuse block recommended. Check and adjust valves as needed... clean and fully rebuild carbs IE new throttle shaft seal, gaskets, needle and seats. New good quality battery, and oil and filter change( recommend upgrade to spin on filter kit from xj4ever did it to my xj750 seca) .

replace. Well tell him that anyway, but it might be fine for a few more miles.
As far as I know mine's still on the original clutch (north of 27,000 miles). I keep thinking that I should replace it, but it keeps not slipping at all, so I don't bother to put a new one in.

Unless clutch is slipping it is usually ok ... you can also adjust if milage is as low as stated should be ok . Highly doubt it would need replaced.

That would be me.... And currently I charge HALF that ..... Send me a private conversation and we can talk.

Engine going weak at 40K?!? Maybe for someone who doesn't know anything about them, or doesn't take ANY care......or it was a shop that told you that------they don't know much about these, either......lol

Yes. MEK will eat the old liner out.

Caswell is the lining kit that I recommend. They have instructions that goes into more detail about how to prep an already lined tank, but essentially that's it. How long you soak will have a lot to do with what the liner material is. Be sure to work in a well ventelated area (outdoors preferably) and wear the appropriate PPE. MEK is about the nastiest solvent there is.

$1400 is a good price for a bike that clean. You could hand him $1200 and see if he keeps it but I wouldn't cheap out and walk away over $200.

And it has about a 99.99% chance of destroying the paint on that tank if not handled extremely carefully!
    What a shame!!

Yes, that is a risk. It's a shame that tank liners used to be so crappy.
I wonder how much of it can be peeled or abraded out without resorting to MEK until the very last.

Only Caswell, and Por15 are any better now, They are the only sealers that I would trust.
Not sure if a 40% muriatic (pool cleaner) soak would remove creme sealer.

If it is the Creme sealer (white, rubbery). Media blasting might remove it. Depends on the blaster.
I would follow this with a 20% phosphoric (MSR) soak as long as there were no signs of pin hole leakage.
