    hi,
I have a 82 Yamaha maxim xj650. I have gas pouring out of the air filter box. I've read many threads. Everything pointed to a float needle being stuck so I cleaned my carb and still having the same issue. It has 82,000 miles on it. Is there any other ideas you guys might have what the problem could be. Any help is greatly appreciated. And if you need anymore info I will provide it.

    Thank you
    Tim

    Thank you @k-moe so much.
Your one post has helped me with the information I'm looking for.
    The links are extremely detailed.

I did replace the needle seats and washer. I couldn't figure out how to install the new needles. They are a little different then the original.

Also how do I get the gas out of the crank case. I was researching and it was saying I have to turn the flywheel to get the gas out.

And I still have to do the oil change.

I can post a picture of the new needle. But i won't be able to til tomorrow.

If there's anymore information you need just ask

    Thank you again k-moe

You need to pull carbs, pull float bowls pull pins remove float. Check tip of the needle if rubber tipped check for grooves. Possibly needs replaced. Drain the oil and refill with fresh oil.

Not sure how you could have replaced the needle seats without installing the new needles. However, the seats and needles are usually matched and if you reinstalled the original needles they probably will not seal. I suggest installing the new needles that came with the seats. Post a picture of what you have when you get a chance.

@tabaka45 thank you. I installed the new seats but kept the original needles. I will post a pic tomorrow and tag you. Maybe you can tell me how to install the new ones.

    Thanks again for the reply.

You get the gas out of the crankcase by draining the oil. None will remain in the cylinders. It drains down after a few minutes.

The new needles will be different in height, but function the same. The height difference is why I posted the link for setting the fuel levels (mentioned in the carb cleaning link).

    Thanks @k-moe

I will drank the oil tonight.

I did read the links you provided.

Also I wasn't able to install the new needles. I cannot figure out how to clip the hanger on this needle also it doesn't have a rubber tip on it

That type of needle does not need a clip, or a rubber tip. Just drop it in the hole prior to installing the float. That also explains why you overflowed. The old needles will not mate with the new seats due to design differences between the two.

It's a good idea to use valve lapping compound or jeweler's rouge to lap the needles to their seats, just to make sure they seal well.

This is pics of the new needle. It doesn't have any rubber tip. I cannot figure out how to get the clip or hanger for the float valve. On the top of the needle

^^^+1 What K-moe says :) You have the metal tip needle which is good , except seat needs to match , and you will need to adjust float height. You do not need the hangar the float rides on tip.

Very tough to remove #2&3 bowls and floats with rack still on the bike, but to polish the valve body....a drop of polish on a golf tee, and spin it with your fingers
