    that relieves pressure from the crankcase. Supposed to have a hose back to the air box then gets burned in the engine.

    The owner before me took the air box off and put 4 round air filters. So what options do I have besides putting the factory air box back on

    they sell little filters for this but you could just run a hose up somewhere rain water won't enter it.
    If you ride the way it is you will have oil mist all over your leg.
    Cars use a little check valve for this, PCV valve - positive crankcase ventilation valve.

    Putting the airbox back on will improve the rideability of your bike, so many think it's just a matter of re-jetting when you ditch the box. In most cases you loose control of the throttle slides, sometimes they no longer open all the way. Where's the performance gain now?

    If the PO dtched the air box, why is there an airbox in your pic?

    Save yourself a lot of frustration and put the stock air box back in. Unless, that is, you want to mess with the carb jets for a long time and still not have it run as well as stock. When I got my 85 XJ700 it was bone stock except for a Uni foam air filter which the po had replaced the stock paper filter with. Even with that minor change I couldn't get the carbs set right. Rather than try rejetting the carbs I got a stock filter from Chacal and that solved the problem.

    Hey tabaka, did the paper filter really make all the difference? I just got done rebuilding my 85 maxim 700, and talking to chacal, he mentioned a paper filter, mine has foam and i feel it's running a little rich. wondering if i should pop for paper and about how much they cost?

    @Wagy

    A paper filter does make a huge differnce. Factory-equivalents are made by EMGO and cost around $10.00.

    If you have either a UNI or K&N you're more likely running lean.

    +1 .

    The foam filter flows a lot more air. If you are running rich with a foam filter then the pilots must be wide open or/and the po installed new jets. Go back to the paper filter (and stock jets if they were replaced) and I think you will be a lot happier. If you install a paper filter you will at least have to adjust the pilot screws. A colortune plug really helps.

    Thanks tabaka, the carbs are so close i'm not sure i want to start tweaking back inside the carb. It has settled down quite a bit since it's first start, i have the stock jets in, but only cleaned them real well along with every part inside and re-installed. I'm ready to road test after 2 yrs on the resto, so i'll see how she does under pressure, thanks again. i will change to paper before i decide if it needs further attention.

    Let me know what mpg you get with the foam filter. I get about 42 on the road at 60-65 mph, and about 40 overall. I never got close to that with the foam filter, but that may have been because I didn't get the carbs tuned well enough. Hope it goes well for you.
