Aside from not securing the carbs too well, which I had posted in another thread, I have 2 other questions:

Going into second/third gear the gears were having a tough time catching for about 2 seconds/2 tries. (I could feel them tring to grab on to something, but wouldn't take) Is this because this was the first time i've ever ridden a motorcycle, or is this perhaps a sign of something else?

When idling after the fresh carb rebuild, I was hearing what I can only describe as taser sounds, the odd loud, high pitched buzz - lighting crack, very weird sound. Have never heard a motor do this before. Do I need to record this sound for troubleshooting, or can one of you XJ brains diagnose this odd sound by that description? Probably the abosulte best description of what it sounded like is a DJ scratching a record, or a CD skipping - loudly. Weird, I know.

You are going to need a Manual.
That bike has an Automatic Cam Chain Tensioner.
You have to Manually Re-set it.

Take off the small YICS Crankshaft Cover (4 Cap Screws ... By tht toe part of the shift lever)

The Rotor for the Ignition is inside there.
Put a wrench on the Square Flats.
Turn the Engine over ... 2 Full revolutions Clockwise coming to a smooth stop.

Then, turn the engine over backward ... quickly. Counterclockwise.

This will present the Cam Chain slack in front of the tensioner and make it pick-up the slack.

That might help with that noise.

Given that the carbs fell off I'll place my money on a vacuum leak for the buzzing sound.

What you describe with the shifting doesn't sound right. I'm not clear on whether you had to shift twice to get the gear to drop in, or if it jumped before engaging. Neither is correct. Have someone that knows how shifting should feel to ride it. Methinks you are going to have to tear into the tranny.

There's no trick to undoing the Fastener that the Shift Lever is on and adjusting it to where you get a good, clean, crisp "Throw" ...

Tilt the Shift Lever slightly downward so when you make the Shift ... you get the whole throw.

But ... Don't put so much on it that your for gets comfortable riding it either up or under. Just comfortable for your riding position and footwear.

Some of our bikes have a Pedal Height Adjustment Feature. All we have to do is loosen the locking nuts and adjust the turnbuckle barrel for minute adjustments.

    Okay, thanks guys.

I'm having a buddy come over today that rides to try out the shifting, to see if it's just me or if it slips.

    It jumped before engaging..

As for the cam tension, I will put that on the list. I won't have time to do it for the next couple weeks - big project i'm working on, but will let you know how it worked out when I get it done. Thanks again!

Wow. Getting those carbs in was like wresting with an alligator nude - it sounds easy, but can be a little tricky!

Well, got them in and went for another drive. I think I was just not confident enought on the clutch and gears, causing it to not catch. Didn't have that problem today after it happened once.

I did notice it made that loud backfiring type noise only once. I found a hole under my left muffler that I didn't notice before (right muffler looks like it HAD a hole as well, patched now), and when the loud sound happens, black soot shoots out the hole.

I will probaly install an ebay exaust over the winter, and along with that cam adjustment, one of them should do the trick to solve it.

    A couple of notes:

When I had the pilot mixture screws turned out at all, the bike would stall whenever I gave it some gas, so I had to turn them in as much as they would go before the bike would not stall when I gave it gas.

Idles at around 2k, sometimes lower, but after about 5 minutes it will run up and idle to 3k, 3.5k, and I shut the bike off because it sounds like if I don't, the bike will implode on itself, leaving only a float pin as a memory.

I'll search some other threads for some idling issues, no sense re-typing what you most have already typed, unless you think there might be a unique problem here.

    Thanks!

You have to get the Pilot Mixtaure Screws "In the Game" ... You're "Ideling" on Main Jet Fuel with the Idle Roor too far open (Probably)

You have to be able to get the Bike to Idle on its own off the Piolt Jets.

Turn all 4 of them OUT ... just past 2-3/4 Turns and let us know how that is working for you.

Plus, it only takes about 15 Minutes to reset that Cam Chain Tension.

I started with them 2-3/4 turns out. It idles great, but then when I apply any juice, the bike will stall immediatley.

I turned them IN 1-3/4 turns, and the same happens.

I turned them IN the remaining 1 turn, and the bike idle's fast, but can now apply gas without stalling.

Are you saying theres a magic spot between the screws being buried and 1-3/4 turns I should be at so the bike will idle well, and also be able to give gas?

Yes. There's a point when the Mixture Screws are turned out enough to allow the bike to Idle without too Throttle Opening with the Idle Adjustment Rod.

The Ideal point is where the Pilot Mixture Screws are adjusted to provide a good Idle ... AND, supplement the Intake Mixture so that there's no backfire or boggin-out coming off the line.

You have them right when you are Idling at a traffic light and can get out of the hole ... quick, ... with smooth acceleration and a seamless transition from being at Idle and Opening the throttle and getting though First gear without Sag, Hesitation, Stalling, Bogging-out ... stuff like that.

Since you have the Pilot Mixture Screws ... close to, if not closed-off ... I'd say you have been Re-Jetted and the Pilots are a step or two hotter than stock.
