I bought an ‘82 Seca turbo last year. Got her running, rode for two weeks, then have had an onslaught of issues. The bike ran out of gas, so I got it to a friends house, got new gas, had a hard time starting it. I finally got it running, went to ride home and it stalled out like it didn't get any gas. Long story short, I towed it home and left it in the garage discouraged. Over the winter an oil leak spring up but I couldn't find the source. Fast forward to this september. I just got the bike to a shop. They rebuilt the carbs and it started fine after nearly a year of sitting. But my mechanic informed me after starting and idling the turbo (which is oil cooled supposedly) began shooting oil into the carburetors. I assume some seal has broken or something has given out. Does anyone have experience with this? Or have any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks.

How many miles on the turbo? Has it been rebuilt?

Check the play in the turbo, and the check valve in the oil pan (you'll need to drain the oil).

These Mitsubishi TD-03 turbos have plain bearings that ride on an oil film. That oil will seep past the bearing when it sits. The oil that seeps past the turbo will burn in the exhaust once it heats up, and the oil in the compressor will get blown into the intake and burned. Even a rebuilt turbo will seep some oil from the line that goes to it the longer it sits; however, if the check valve fails and if the bearings are worn, they'll seep a lot more.

The fuel issue happened to me once when the bike sat for 8 months. A full carb clean fixed it (even though the carb appeared clean). These bikes really don't like to sit for more than a week or so.

    Thanks for the response!

I actually do not know the total miles on the Turbo. Its in excellent exterior condition and was told by the previous owner that the guy he got it from was a former Yamaha mechanic who made it a labor of love to repair. On the outside it shows.

I had an oil leak begin over the winter, so I am thinking that something must have let go and was leaking oil from the turbo while it sat. Naturally, when my mechanic rebuilt the carbs and fired her up, that oil leak found new life and made a mess of everything.

Like you said, sitting has caused it problems. I am determined to get it up and running again. The first two weeks after I got it, it ran fine. Talk about an exciting experience.

Anyways, I've started asking around about finding someplace local to possibly have the turbo rebuilt.
