My seat has a decent size tear in it from my stubby legs scraping my boot heel on the seat while throwing a leg over. I was thinking about reupholstering the seat myself using the diymotorcycleseat.com instructions and was wondering if anyone has used deer skin for this and, if so, how that worked out for them. I've heard it is a little more pliable than the leathers/material you would normally use. I was thinking that would be a great way to do this cheap and, even if it didn't turn out great, or not as durable as the original, I could just make one every couple of years.

I was thinking that would look cooler, but maybe would get nasty sooner. I had a really nice looking buck walk 20 yards in front of me 2 years back that would have made a real attractive seat, ha ha. Too bad he only had 2 points on one side and was missing the other.

It'd be comfy for the annual naked ride.

Fair warning, though......buckskin will stretch and sag like crazy if it gets wet.......you'd have to do some serious waterproofing...it's also very thin and weaker compared to horse/cow/etc.... leather......so durability could present an issue .

I've heard that out stretches more significantly than other leathers. I was thinking that it would probably get pretty nasty when wet if I did leave the fur on. I figure that my first go at this will probably turn out crappy, so the shorter life span isn't too bad. I haven't tanned a hide before either, so there are plenty of ways this could go wrong. I figure I'm not out much either way though.

Buckskin aught to last you just fine, its pretty durable. I made my seat out of brown suede - which I was told not to use because its too fragile - and my seat has lasted 2 summers un-garaged with no signs of giving up any time soon. The color is a little different now, and after getting sick of buying saddle soap to waterproof it I just started rubbing old oil into it. Anyway, assuming you take better care of your buck skin than I do my suede it will last you quite a while.
