you do mean inside the motor correct?

    have you tried a vacuum?
    which cylinder?

take the gas tank off so you can see?

    how long was the dowel?

I was trying to put the cam shafts back and I accidentally bumped one of it (the one closest to the cam chain recess, of all [grrrr....]), yes into the cam chain recess....

I got the gas tank off already, but the top frame and the bunch of cables are on the way so I can hardly see down there.

the dowel is one of those that goes with the camshaft caps.

    Thanks.

Thank you everyone. Got it. I used a magnetic pickup tool, as suggested by a friend.

Go to harbor freight and get their cheapie extension magnet. It looks like a radio antenna but with a small magnet on the end. Stick it down in no hopefully you can attract it. Otherwise, you'll need to pull the oil pan. It's probably gonna be laying down there.

Bigger thing is to not panic. This is a correctable issue as long as you don't panic.

Thank you. That is exactly what I used, the $1.99 extension magnet from AutoZone.
