just talking to a buddy of mine and we both have xj550 Seca's. we both have a clutch plate chatter when the clutch is out but goes away when the clutch lever is pulled in. I always thought it was a worn clutch basket or something but is this a "thing" with these bikes?

might be the springs need replacing the springs put the pressure on clutch plates when lever is released or you have worn clutch plates

It's not a thing. Something is wrong. My bet is that the clutch friction plates are quite likely the originals.

Both the springs and clutch plates have been replaced 400 miles ago and it still does it. I didn't replace friction plates tho, they didn't "look" worn or burnt. Acts like it needs a shim behind the plates. Thanks for the manual!

that would leave the damper in the clutch boss by the manual as the cause of the chatter

Or clutch boss ears that need to be dressed, or friction plates that are really freaking old and need to be replaced.

When you say you didn't replace the friction plates...what did you replace? The metal drive plates? Because they are usually serviceable, but the friction (driven) plates are what wear out. Chattering could be cause by glazed plates (commonly caused by not properly soaking them before install) or even the wrong type of motor oil.

So please clarify which plates you replaced, and let us know what kind of oil you are running?

They'll only be half-soaked in oil to begin with, and after that they'll only be splattered with oil. Presoaking is very helpful, so that the friction material can absorb the oil evenly.

I presoaked the plates before installation... have any of you tore down the clutch to replace the dowel that holds on the clutch gear? It looks like the original dowel has worn down and is allowing play with the clutch gear.

Will post pics when I tear clutch down. My plan is to replace the dowel pin part # 93605-10108-00 that holds the pump drive gear part# 4G0-13324-09-00.
