I got a free 80 Maxim 650 6 weeks ago. It hasn't run for two years.

Part after part, it was finished this weekend.
Here are before and after pictures.

Looks good bokey! You put in some serious wrench time there. You should be real proud tolling around on that beast. I have an 82' XJ650 maxim. Care to share your part supplier? ;)

Okay. Assuming not everything was replaced, and you scraped a few knuckles buffing and polishing the hell out of the thing, what cleaners worked best for you? I am finishing the mechanical aspects of getting an 85 xj-700 back up and running, and am now beginning to work on the appearance. I've got this white flaky stuff on the wheels that is not coming off with soap and water. I don't want to jump in with an abrasive so, again, what worked best for you? Thanks in advance. Jay

    Thanks all.

It's a different tank. Replacemnet was sanded, primed, painted. (Underside has POR15)

    Replacemnet front fender.

Stripped paint off side covers, plastic filler to smooth, sanded and painted.

For the wheels just needed a good degreasing and scrubbing.

The turn signals were sanded and painted.

Other that that some brake and carb cleaner(the one in the gallon can).

    Great work!
There are some amazing stories happening in here.

Personally, I'm surprised that the Bike Mag's don't do a story on us.
We got people in here with amazing talent and ability.

(And, one guy up in Olympia who needs a visit from his Fairy XJ-Father!)

It's amazes me to see the transformations as some of the Projects go from Square One -to- Classic Restored!

Congratulations on the fine example of hard work and determination shown in the "After" photograph.

    Bravo!!!

Very Nice! That's a fine looking '80 maxim. You do nice work, now enjoy the compliments you will get on that classic bike.

in addition to all your other hard work those are great before and after pix, and it shows that there is no reason for somebody on a budget to not be riding, it frustrates me when friends say they "cant afford" a bike because they just want to pose on a shiny new scoot, I say ride what got but just ride..... good work.

In addition to the fine job you did I'd like to add that I'm pleased that yet another sweet bike has been saved from the salvage yard! It's nice to see people restoring and putting '70's and '80's vintage Japanese bikes back on the road where they belong.

Ride safe and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
