So digging in on my 1982 xj750 Maxim, When I have the clutch lever pulled in and shift down into 1st it lightly jumps forward. it isn't the normal shift click that I've noticed on most motorcycles. The previous owner has put a new clutch cable on it, so I'm guessing its just needs adjusted. I looked through the information overload, I thought i saw something about clutch adjustment, but then I could not find it again today. (maybe I was overloaded....)

    Thanks guys

there will always be some jump when it goes in gear.
so to adjust the cable, put the top adjuster at about halfway in/out. with the bottom adjuster, put some slack in it, push the arm forward with your finger, push it good but only with one finger, now take up the slack with the bottom adjuster. now there should be no free play in the lever at all.
your clutch might slip like this but try your "jump into first" test,.......... that jump isn't going away.
now turn the top adjuster in about 3/4 to 1 turn to give you about 1mm (.04 inch) gap at the lever/perch joint.
a new cable will stretch so keep that gap as it does
