Yes it will drop right in place and work, but it will LOOK out of place.

And Welcome to the Site !! Are you building something custom?

    1. Yes. The 550 Maxim and Seca FRAMES are a different shape which will throw the seat/tank relationship off.

    2. The only one that has any HOPE of fitting would be a Seca 550 tank. The others will be too long.

Does anyone have a picture of a seca tank on a maxim? I've been interested in seeing this for awhile. TIME, I know you say it will look "off," but I'm still interested. Perhaps there is a way to make it look better.

Someone with "Photoshop" can easily show what the results would look like. If you don't have photoshop, you could print out side views and put the tank on the bike the old fashioned way - -with scissors.

I know the Seca 750 tank won't look right on any other bike.

Take a close look at a side view photo of a 550 Seca.

Take a close look at a side view photo of a 550 Maxim.

The Seca is almost a straight line along the bottom of the gas tank, and then the seat goes NEARLY straight back from there.

The Maxim's gas tank curves sharply downward toward the rear, then the line is extended as the seat drops down further yet. The frame rails do the same.

The FRAMES are different; the Max's "cuts down" sharply toward the rear, to provide the lower seat height.

Here's an interesting tidbit, and it might be worth looking into: when the Radian first came out ('96?) it used the 550 MAXIM frame, not the Seca's.
A first year Radian tank will fit your Maxim, and probably better than the Seca tank. Just a thought.

    But... a tank from a 96 Radian WOULDN'T fit on a 650 Maxim, correct?

Not likely, it would probably be too SHORT.

The 550's and their descendents, the XJ600S Seca II and the Radian are pretty unique unto themselves, frame dimension-wise.

The Radian was a REAL "parts-room" bike; engine from one bike, drive train from another, frame from yet another, etc. They just happened to use the 550 Max frame.

REVIVING A DEAD POST..... has anyone put a radian tank on their maxim? Any pictures?" What is their gas capacity," I ask without even being arsed to google it.... Wondering how it would work with the stock seat, and wondering if its even worth considering as a mod.

a seca 550 tank can be put on a maxim but you need to make a plate to mount rear of tank because seca tank is longer. if you remove the side reflectors from the maxim the tank will go forward a little more but then the tripple tree will dent the tank. also the maxim seat will need to be modified at the front with how it is mounted , i would go with the seca seat on maxim and work on how to secure it to the frame by welding on hinges and lock the way a seca is mounted.

I have no info on the 600 radian tank except 3.2 gallons gas which is less than a 550 maxim tank of 3.4 gallons and 550 seca 3.9 gallons

as you can see you have side cover issues too

As fitz said a few years back, the frames are identical on the 550s. So from looking at the tank and the mounting tab on the radian tank you can see the tab looks VERY similar to the 550 tab. The problem you'll run into is the seat, along with the angle which the tank from the radian sits. For lack of a better term, theirs a cowl/tank trim around the radian tank which would be an obvious eye sore if you were to swap.

Being a smaller tank, and the obvious body line difference, i wouldn't venture away from a stock tank, but thats just my two cents. Out of curiosity, why are you considering the swap?

I attached some pictures for you to see some the points I mentioned.

Its kinda "pre-consideration." I'm just preparing for a winter rebuild, so if I *were* going to swap tanks, I would want to start thinking about it now so that I can write it into the re-build script. I'm not into the Seca tanks, but when I googled the radian tanks after running across this thread I sorta like the look of them, missing tank trim and all. It kinda gave me an idea for building a leather tank bag that fits around that 'neck' by the seat.

Its also just good to know in general what tanks I could switch out to if I need to.

awesome. I say go for it. I love to see different builds, it should fit easier than a seca tank. Regardless of what tank you go with you'll run into a seat issue. I think with the radian tank the maxim seat will fit, again, better than a maxim seat with a seca tank, since the seca tank is longer. With custom work anything can be done if you're up for the challenge.

The only thing stopping me from actually making it a part of the plan right now is just that right now I'm riding on a seat that I re-covered myself with oiled suede and I really like it. I got the suede on a closeout deal at the leather shop, so its not likely I could reproduce it as cheaply. On the other hand, rebuilding the seat isn't the worst idea in the world... my tailbone was a little tender on that last 600 mile weekend.
