Hey there guys. so I was adjusting my shims yesterday and had my neighbor rotating the crank for me so i could watch the buckets. Well, he sort of cranked it around and knocked the plastic ignition coils off for the started. My question is, do i need to fully replace this starter or do you think i can re-secure them inside the ignition cover with some sort of adhesive? Thanks for the help guys! Its on an 1981 xj650 maxim if that makes a difference.

I think so, im talking about the two plastic black pieces. I guess i was supposed to be screwed in, but it looks like the were also secured with some adhesive to the metal plates. When the wrench hit the plastic they came off. The screws and metal are all perfectly intact, but the plastic pieces have become unmounted. Can i just re-secure them with adhesive? (if so what kind?)

I would ohm them out first up at the tci connector to see if they still work.
I would advise you find another set that you can screw to the plate.
jb weld may do the trick for mounting them

    Pick-up coils:
    1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range

I would strongly advise finding another set of pickup coils, and saving that set as a learning tool and future project. The pickup coils must be correctly, and accurately, indexed to the pickup coil plate in order to ensure that the ignition timing is correct.

+1 they are easily found on ebay etc inexpensive. They are a precision item and having one come loose will leave you stranded.

I did the same thing, very easy to break one off if you're not careful.

welp. lesson learned. I jb'd it. it was down snug. started up great, rode it around the block is was running like a dream. Then i heard a quick pop and it died. Popped that starter cover off and found a mangled coil. This is what happens when you're cheap and lazy. Am now buying a new coil to be reinstalled correctly.
