1983 Yamaha xj650 Maxim

Hi I just bought a 1983 maxim and put new battery into it and it starts and everything however does not stay on long. choke doesnt rev it up any also I know there probably is old gas in it as it sat awhile from place I bought it. also oil is filled up so I am not sure what is going on and so i could use help. also i need to get a free manual somewhere for repairs any thoughts.

 

If the bike sat for a long time with old gas it will need to have the carbs stripped and every parts inspected and seals and orings replaced

it's probably:

1-clogged up and only running on the enricher

2- probably not all cyls firing

3- low on fuel because it has drained into the crankcase, overfilling it and polluting it

AND

4- floats sticking so either starving or flooding depending

I would expect that you have ALL of the above happening

Time to read the "in the church of Clean" forum, then after you do, we can talk you through the next steps.

If you are totally unfamiliar ( or paranoid) of going into the carbs, I do offer rebuild services.

The bike in your avatar has some minor mods done..... It's also possible that the jetting was messed with when the 4/1 exhaust was put on.

^^^ What they said. Remove oil filler cap sniff the opening if it smell like gas your crankcase is filled with a mixture of gas/oil. You need to drain and refill ( After you pull carbs and rebuild and reinstall) . Go to upper RT corner of page click on xj4ever catalog Chacal has most new parts for bike and service is awesome.
