Gday fellow xjers, my 750 seems to be very soft in the front end. It does have the air valve set up on the fork caps however I am missing one. Recently done oil and seals but the upper forks sit almost to the bottom of the fork tubes. Im thinking oil wont fix the problem cause its just a dampener its almost like I need heavier springs to hold the bike up some. I've heard to that the air valves are not worth the time or hassle. Any help or ideas greatly appreciated. Cheers

Springs can sag over time. A new set seems to be what you need. It's also possible that some prior owner cut the springs to lower the ride hight.

The air valves are worth having in working order. With them you gain adjustable preload.

Thanks kmoe. Do you happen to know the length that the springs are meant to be? And also is it worth the hassle of replacing the springs if mine are the correct length?

Spring free length is listed as follows:

    XJ750RH and RJ: 604.9mm

XJ750 J: 458.5mm ( I suspct this is a misprint, and that the Maxim has the same springs as the Seca).

Fiting new springs is hardly a hassle, though it is a fair expense. There are seveeral companies that make direct, progressive wound (as stock) replacements.

    Yama haha... nice one haha.
Just put these into my bike... makes a HUGE difference in comparison to the original springs that were in it.
I got the springs for the XJ650 turbo as my bike is the XJ750P which has the 650Turbo bits at the front... probably could have gone for the XJ900 but what I bought worked a charm.

Cool thing was I rang the chap and spoke to him and he gave me good advice... crazy!

Gday cds, thanks for your input as well as kmoe. I might pull my Springs out and have a measure up. My 750 is the 5g8. Are all 81 750 springs the same length?

You've got somewhat of an oddball (for us). 5g8 is the Japanese market XJ750A. That is a 750 engine in a 650 Seca frame, but with XJ750 style bodywork. I'm not sure what forks it should have, and I don't have a manual for that model. Is there an anti-dive unit present?

Gday bushy, yes correct, same bike, same numbers. Although mine has different indicators and a jmca 4 into 1 exhaust but overall the same shape bikes with chrome headlight and clocks.

OK then. IIRC it also uses the Seca 650 forks (no air fittings up top).

Spring free-length should be 540.5 mm.

Thanks kmoe. Mine does however have air fittings in the fork caps, not in the trees does that alter the spring length any?

Hmmm... That I do not know. I doubt that the spring length would be any different just because of having air fittings on the caps. If they had the air collars that would point to the forks being from a 750.

Yes. The brake caliper mount is the giveaway (now that I bother to look at it).

Was this 650/750 mash up ever available in North America? This is the first I've heard of it, and it's already on my Xmas wish list! It fixes all that I dislike about my 750.

I am in LOVE with the "Special 750" badge on the side! So special! My xj seems so... regular.

No. JDM market only. Find one anywhere else and it was privately imported.
I'm not sure about Canada, but the U.S. allows vehicles older than 25 yars of age to be importd quite easily and cheaply.

Umm, perhaps your leaving something out that I'm too lazy to go back and check for, but there are plenty of 750 Secas around here. I had one...

Edit: went back and read, Mr Toomany is prolly referring to the 650/750 hybrid. Me dummy. Old thread, old brain, bad remember.

Yes you did. Y'all got almost all of the 1984 XJ750S Seca models that were produced for N.A., and you got plenty of the 81-83 XJ750R Seca models as well. So you got the engine, just not in the same bike that the OP got it in.

Nobody did. It was reserved for the home-market.

    I envy you having a 750rl; wouldn't swap you for a 900 (if I had one) though :p

That's because you have so many of the darn things!

Can you imagine? Someone tells you that you have a nice 900rk and you're able to respond by saying, "Thank you, but which one are you referring to?"

    LOL!

Might I remind everyone that a person can only ride one motorcycle at a time.

More than one 900rk? Now you're just showing off.

There needs to be a "Try my 900" concession stand at the next carb clinic.

For those who intend on attending... I've already bought all the tickets.
