Question ? I'm in the process of installing new friction plates (Barnett ) springs and the bolts In my xj 1100 I had a little noise In my clutch so I took the basket back apart and cleaned up the edges of the basket and the clutch boss. When I tried ... to put the 6 point star in I broke it trying to torque it down . I have another now that I got on E-BAY , not wanting to use the old bolts again I ordered new ones from a bike (still waiting for them) shop ... My QUESTION is can I use bolts from an auto parts store advanced auto and auto zone there exactly the same m6-1.00x25mm but the grade class is 10.9 . Are they within the tolerance that will work or should I wait for the bolts I've bought from Yamaha I'M chomping at the bit... to get my bike back together and another Question is it has been setting with the oil out of it for almost a week now in the garage, will this hurt my engine when I try to fire it up again when I get things back together ? I'm going to take the basket apart again and reoil all the plates, if this is necessary ? and check things again. Some help here would be really be great !!!!

10.9 bolt should be plenty strong to hold pressure plate down. What kind of torque did you put on original bolt to break it?
6mm bolt usually 6-8 ft lbs
And tighten them evenly until pressure plate seated then torque down

They can break from the stress of normal use combined with the stress of being removed. Clutch spring bolts are considered a one-time-use item.

Have never seen it noted as one time use by Yamaha or Honda

Me either. I left out some words..... when they are from a bike that's likely been sitting for a long time.

We'll let that cover from my 70-hour-workweek brainfart. ;)

Well, it won't unless you don't put any oil in first

Yamaha manuals are written for the trained Yamaha tech with the assumption that you have some training in what you are doing. so they leave out the common understood basics.

    in this link
Should Cam Bolts First Be Torque To Specs, Before Trying To Get Accurate Valve Shim Clearance Readin
what is in red is the important thing to consider about reusing bolts.

my Chiltons manual tells me to replace the head bolts when I change my head gasket on my car. the bolts are torqued above 100 ft lbs.
di d I change them ? no because the worst thing to happen would be a head gasket leak or bolt would snap when retorquing them

in the case of the clutch it would be major failure there are a few posts from a year ago where members went through a few clutch explosions not pretty sight.

bottom line is think of what will happen if the bolt fails because you did not spend a few bucks and if you can live with it

The first time I had the clutch in and out of it I used the bolts that were in it and didn't have a drama , Guess I was lucky , So the bolts I got at the auto parts store are fine to use , I guess the shop where I ordered the bolts from Yamaha just needed a sale 15.00, or its a liability thing when I asked If the 10.9 grade bolts I found would work ? Is there any tricks or tips about installing the 6 star fingers and keeping the springs inline so I don't break the star thing again ? Maybe I just answered my own question lol . Thanks Everyone for all your help I've done a clutch in a xs650 I use to have and didn't have all these issues .....? This thing I'm working on is pretty sweet for an old Yamaha it has house of color paint and is in very nice condition for 30 year old bike . And the thing runs Great !

Just finished a Ford V10 that spun a rod bearing, and head, rod cap and a few other bolts are torque to stretch one time

your metric 10.9 bolts are a bit better than a sae grade 8 [6 lines]
what were the originals marked? no mark means their recycled coat hangers
    use some removeable thread locker

Well I put it back together today and everything checked out fine so far. Might do one final clutch adjustment,Then the only thing left is to road test it . I hope my bungling lol might have helped someone else that has these issues with there xj 1100 .I was very careful putting the pressure plate bolts in this time and did not have any trouble with my brand new old 6 point star . Actually glad I took the basket back off and checked the plates because one wasn't placed in the right order also cleaned the steels a little more too I also had a better lock plate to put back on it . Thank You guys for all your input and advice about this thing ! On to the next issue installing another fuse box ? I will prolly be begging for help then too lol This site is GREAT !!!
